International Transfer Student Information

Basic Facts

  • Applications are accepted for Fall Semester (August) or Spring Semester (January).
  • Tri-State accepts applications for transfer credit (exemptions) from any post secondary program recognized by your home country’s government or other US universities.
  • Credits earned with grades of "C" (2.0) or better may be transferred to Tri-State. All accepted credits may not count toward the specific degree requirements of the chosen major at Tri-State.
  • Tri-State uses the "A" = 4.0 grading system. All international transcripts are converted to the Tri-State grading system by our evaluator.
  • The credit evaluation must be completed before acceptance into any program. The evaluation document shows the number of credits transferred into the degree program and the number of credits remaining for graduation. See the appropriate department page for courses and number of credits required for the Bachelor degree.
  • Students must complete more than half of the major courses at Tri-State to earn the Tri-State Bachelor degree. This does not include general education courses.

Academic Records

  • The student should send complete, official academic records, in English, directly  to the World Education Services, P.O. Box 11623, Chicago, IL 60611-0623, USA. Click here for the Application for Evaluation for Foreign Education Credentials. Records should include courses taken, grades received, and degrees or certificates earned. If the grading system in your country is different from the US, an explanation of the coding system used to evaluate the student's work should accompany the records. Please have any post secondary transcripts evaluated in the course-by-course report.
  • Students must complete at least 30 credit hours at Tri-State to earn the Tri-State Bachelor degree.
  • One credit hour is equivalent to one hour of class time per week. (ex. 3 credit hour course meets three times per week)
  • Only credits attempted and earned at Tri-State are used to determine the GPA.
  • There are 16 weeks in every semester. There are two semesters per year plus an optional summer term.
  • Transfer students are not required to live on campus. Students who choose to live off campus must secure their own housing.

Click here for the Application for Evaluation for Foreign Education Credentials. This must include proof of completion of 12 years of education or the standard for your country. Records should include courses taken, grades received, and degrees or certificates earned. If the grading system in your country is different from the US, an explanation of the coding system used to evaluate the student's work should accompany the records.
Articulation Agreements
Tri-State and a number of US community colleges have transfer (articulation) agreements that facilitate the application procedure and offer special benefits.

Students from any US two-year college should check with their transfer counselors to see if their schools have such agreements.
