tri-state university women's golf outlook

2003 OUTLOOK

Coach Bill Maddock, in his first year at the helm as coach of the Tri-State University lady Thunder golf team, has a lot to be excited about. There is a strong tradition of women’s golf at Tri-State University: the Thunder were N.A.I.A. National Team Champions in 1997 and have sent a number of individuals to nationals over the years. Coach Maddock will try to continue the reputation for excellence set by previous head coaches Lori Stinson and Walt Lilley. Playing out of highly rated Zollner Golf Course on the TSU campus gives the team the atmosphere needed to perfect their skills. Team members are excited about their fall schedule, which has them playing some of the best courses in the Midwest. The team will have strong competition from St. Mary’s of Notre Dame, Albion College, Hope College, Kalamazoo College, and other members of the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA).

The team is expected to be very competitive because of the leadership of veterans Alexis Davidson, Sabrina Gordon, Heather Grimes, Mandy Barlett and December Szymecko, plus the addition of three strong freshman, Brittany Kempers-Makohn, Tracey Ellis and Lisa Hayes.

Coach Maddock believes the talent on the team will feed off of itself. “The competition for positions on the team between the veterans and the freshman can only make the team stronger,” he said
