Chemistry Major

What is chemistry?
Chemistry is the study of matter and its changes.

The study of chemistry is broad because, to many, it is considered the central science upon which other sciences are based. There are millions of chemical compounds and reactions, so the study of chemistry is broken into subgroups: organic chemistry, the study of compounds of carbon; inorganic chemistry, the study of compounds made up of elements other than carbon; biochemistry, the study of biological chemicals; quantitative chemistry, which is concerned with the precise analysis of matter; and physical chemistry, the study of in-depth mathematical relationships within atoms and molecules.

What careers do chemistry students enter?
Many types of industries involved in the manufacture and distribution of pharmaceuticals, food, plastics, and metallurgy hire chemistry graduates to be a
a lab technician
a sales/technical support person
a quality control analyst

Why study chemistry at TSU?
Along with a dedicated faculty and state-of-the art equipment, Tri-State offers a chemistry student the opportunity to pursue multiple majors and minors at a school known for producing highly sought after graduates who are ready to make an immediate impact in the workplace. With the help of academic advisors within the Science Department, a student can tailor a four-year bachelor’s degree to meet his/her career objectives. For example, a student interested in technical sales or support might major in chemistry and minor in business.
