Study Abroad

The Study Abroad office at Tri-State University assists TSU students who want to study overseas.

Students from outside the United States who wish to study at TSU should visit the TSU Office of Admission website.

Many American college and university students choose to spend some time studying overseas during their undergraduate degree programs.  There are numerous benefits for students who choose to participate.  Travel opportunities offered through TSU open student’s eyes, hearts, and minds to the world beyond campus. Exploring diverse cultures, living away from home, and viewing the world from a fresh perspective help TSU students integrate their academic studies and international experiences into a larger perspective of the world, and their place in it.  Many businesses and industries have facilities or suppliers overseas.  Many TSU graduates will have the opportunity to travel overseas as part of their work-related responsibilities.   Participating in a Study Abroad opportunity while in college can provide a comfort-level for international travel as well as life-long memories.

Each spring semester TSU offers HNR 401 Humanities Honors Seminar, a one-credit hour course focusing on a special topic relating to an overseas location.  Students then take part in a week-long trip there over TSU spring break.  Recently, the topics have been Berlin, WWII, and the Cold War and Normandy and Paris: D-Day, Art and Architecture.  The Spring 2008 topic is Vienna:  Haydn and the Habsburgs. For further information, click the link on the right.

Students who want a longer time period overseas can choose to participate for a semester, an academic year, or a summer session.  Most students opt for one semester (typically second semester of sophomore year or first semester of junior year) or a summer session (typically the summer between sophomore and junior years or between junior and senior years).

It is critical that you begin planning early in your academic career particularly if your major has a fairly rigid list of courses offered in a certain sequence.  Talk with your academic advisor and visit with the TSU Study Abroad office to discuss your options.  Begin by completing the Study Abroad Pre-Planning Sheet and Application.

Tri-State University partners with several universities.  Students can choose from study programs located in:

Students are encouraged to check out these schools' Web sites for application and deadline details.

Through TSU's direct affiliation with International Studies Abroad (ISA), students can participate in affordable summer semester and year long programs in Spain, Italy, France, England, Mexico, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Chile, Peru, and Australia. Details, costs and other information regarding ISA programs can be accessed here.

The link on the right, Deciding Where and When, provides several searchable websites by program, country, and provider to help you find suitable opportunities.  Sites are annotated regarding majors, countries, etc.  Some sites offer the option of internships overseas.

Most programs require that the student’s cumulative grade point average be at least 2.5 and some require at least 3.0.
