HNR 401 Vienna - Haydn and the Habsburgs
What is it?
Humanities Honor Seminar which includes a week-long trip to Vienna, Austria over spring break. Leave Friday, February 29, 2008 and return Saturday, March 8, 2008.
Who is teaching it?
+ Dr. Dolores Tichenor, Assistant VP for Study Abroad and Professor of Mathematics
+ Dr. Jeanine Samuelson, Professor of German and Speech
What will the class involve?
The class will meet each week for an hour in preparation for the trip. Dr. Samuelson and Dr. Tichenor are experienced travelers and have both traveled to Vienna several times. Dr. Samuelson will assist students with the German language and will discuss music. Dr. Tichenor will discuss the Habsburg family and their castles and cathedrals. Both will discuss the culture of Vienna. After the trip, we will share our experiences and impressions of the trip.
What will it cost? You will register for the HNR 401 course. The trip will require payment of $1,550 early to allow the flight and hotel reservations to be made. ($800 by Nov. 1, 2007 and $750 by Jan. 11, 2008. You will have to plan to have about $300 to $500 additional (depending on what you wish to buy and what food costs.)
What does the $1,550 include? (Tentative depending on costs)
- Roundtrip transportation from Angola to Detroit Airport (leave Angola about noon on Friday, February 29, 2008)
- Roundtrip airfare from Detroit to Vienna, Austria
- Seven nights lodging in Vienna (double occupancy) walking distance to many sites
- Roundtrip transportation from Vienna airport to hotel
- Breakfast each morning in Vienna
- Opening and closing dinners in Vienna
- Half-day guided bus tour of Vienna
- Entrance fees/tours of Schonbrunn Palace, Hofburg Palace, St. Stephen’s Cathedral, and at least one additional museum
What are you responsible for?
- Having a valid passport (and visa if needed). US Citizens do not need a visa for Austria.
- Ground transportation in Vienna (we will use the subway, trams, buses, etc.)
- Other meals not indicated above (lunch each day and five dinners)
- Any shopping, souvenirs, other events that you elect to participate in.
How much will that cost?
Depending on your choices, the estimate is $300 to $500.
What will we be doing? (Tentative schedule subject to change.)
- Friday, February 29, 2008—leave Angola about noon for Detroit. Fly to Vienna arriving next day.
- Saturday, March 1, 2008—arrive Vienna in the morning, check into hotel. Tour St. Stephen’s Cathedral. Central Vienna by foot. Welcome dinner together to meet your fellow travelers.
- Sunday, March 2, 2008—Church (hear the Vienna Boys Choir) or sleep-in in the morning. A half-day guided bus tour of Vienna in the afternoon. Evening free.
- Monday, March 3, 2008—Tour Hofburg Palace, Treasury, Opera House. Shop and wander central Vienna.
- Tuesday, March 4, 2008—Tour Kunsthistorisches Museum and Karlskirche.
- Wednesday, March 5, 2008—Haus der Musik museum
- Thursday, March 6, 2008—Tour Peterskirche, Votivkirche, Roman ruins, Freud’s office.
- Friday, March 7, 2008—Additional museum(s), shopping, optional activities.
- Saturday, March 8, 2008—Leave Vienna early in the morning for the flight home arriving in Detroit in the afternoon. Return to Angola.
Optional activities which will entail additional costs:
- Bike tour of Vienna
- Attend an opera, ballet, or concert one of the evenings
- Tour the Spanish Riding Stables (Lipizzaner horses) or attend a performance
- Visit the Prater (amusement park) ferris wheel
- Porcelain factory
- Esterhazy Palace tour
- Others to be determined by mutual interest
