English as a Second Language (ESL)
Tri-State's intensive ESL Transition program offers a variety of classes to non-native English speakers who need to improve their English language skills before entering an academic field of study.
Students who score below 550 on the paper-based TOEFL test and those who do not have a TOEFL score must take an ESL placement test upon arrival. Based on the results of the test, students are placed into the proper level of course work.
The ESL program is divided into four levels with students in class from 25-32 hours per week. The first three levels offer full-time ESL classes while the fourth level enables students to take both ESL classes as well as some other preparatory through the Jannen School of Arts and Sciences. Students usually finish the program after approximately one year.
Frequently asked ESL questions
Q How long are the sessions?
They are 16 weeks long. The same length as one semester.
Q How many levels do you have?
Right now, we have three levels + a "bridge" level. The three
levels are beginning, intermediate, and advanced. The "bridge" level is
for students who have completed an ESL program but still need help to
bring their English reading, writing, and grammar skills up to an
acceptable college-level.
Q How long are ESL students in class every day?
Most ESL students are in class 5 - 7 hours every day Monday through
Thursday and 2-4 hours on Fridays.
Q Why are there no classes on Friday afternoons?
We want to allow our Muslim students the chance to pray at the
mosque, which is just a two-minute walk from campus. Also, two or three
times per month, we go on outings together on Friday afternoons. We
like to visit local places such as parks, museums, the police and fire
departments, local businesses, and the Auburn Kruse Car Auction.
