17th Annual Alumni and Friends Golf Outing

Tri-State University’s 17th annual Alumni and Friends Golf Outing Friday at Zollner Golf Course bolstered the Annual Fund for Scholarships more than any of the previous outings. The fund provides financial aid for deserving TSU students.

This year’s event surpassed the Office of Alumni and Development goal of $50,000 by nearly $5,000, raising close to $13,000 more than last year’s event. One hundred ninety-two alumni, friends, and community business partners made up the 48 teams in the Florida scramble format tournament.

Hot weather prevailed for the alumni golfers, who traveled from as far as Pennsylvania and California for the outing. Fifth Third Bank sponsored a lunch for golfers, and players in morning and afternoon flights returned to Witmer Clubhouse in the evening for dinner and the awarding of prizes for shots closest to the pin, longest drive, longest putt, and other special contests.

The team of Joel Bickel, Jeff Reiniche, Mike Rogers, and John Weicht finished with a score of 53 to win the tournament, while Todd and John Stock, Scott Gruner, and Lance Krebs took second. Sarah Brown, Bob Shearer, Terry Stanley, and Liz Wall placed third.

Frank Hall, BSBA ’70, and his wife, Beth, of Hall Bros. Transportation in Orleans, Ind., stepped up as the first-ever overall event sponsors. Rita Nedele, BSASG ’73, and her husband, Chuck, sponsored the evening’s prime rib dinner.

First ever TSU caribbean cruise

Tri-State University and Holland America made a perfect union for the first ever Tri-State University cruise! Alumni and friends of TSU set sail and enjoyed a warm week in the Caribbean where they were able to escape the final snowfalls and blustery days of winter with others in the extended TSU family.

Guests enjoyed seven days of lavish dinners, spectacular shows, desserts that you just had to see in order to believe, relaxing spa services, seminars and all before they even left the ship. This seven day escape featured stops at Grand Turk in Turks and Caicos, the British island of Tortola, Phillipsburg on St. Marteen, and the beautiful private island of Half Moon Cay in the Bahamas.

TSU guests traveled to this idyllic Caribbean region where they experienced world class diving, exquisite wildlife, diverse tropical cultures, spectacular shopping, and many excursions. After all was said and done and we headed back to the States, TSU guests gathered one last time for a farewell reception where they had the opportunity to reminisce as they viewed a rolling slide show of TSU photos from 1884 to 2007.

It will be a long time before those who attended can forget the silky, soft, white sand and the turquoise blue seas. Looking back on the whole experience it seems as if it was a dream, and we thank those of you who spent the week with us for giving us the opportunity to spend this time together.

We hope you will enjoy the next Escape with TSU.

TSU Entertains nearly 50 in Detroit

Despite frigid temperatures, TSU had a record turn out for this alumni dinner. Dr. Earl D. Brooks, Dr. David Finley, Dr. Dolores Tichenor, and Julie Wert had the opportunity to entertain nearly 50 guests. This was an exclusive opportunity to tour the private Roush Automotive Collection, featuring concept cars, one-of-a-kind classics, race cars, trophies, team equipment, photographs, and other artifacts, signifying over 40 years of motor sports achievements exclusively with TSU. Alumni enjoyed a first-hand look at this spectacular collection that contained educational exhibits of products and processes from Roush as a supplier of technological services to the automotive and aviation industries.

TSU escapes to the Bahia

Alumni joined TSU in paradise on October 6, 7, and 8, 2006, as they traveled to "The Bahia," San Diego's original beachfront resort. Guests enjoyed a three day weekend, which included a President's Reception, a cruise aboard the Bahia Belle, a tour of the Midway Aircraft Carrier Museum, Old Town Trolley Tour, and Alumni Dinner.

Guests had a chance to mingle with Earl D. Brooks II, Ph.D., president of TSU, and catch up with former classmates over hors 'devours in the Del Mar room overlooking Mission Bay during the President's Reception. Friday's ride aboard the Bahia Belle, a Mississippi-style sternwheeler, featured music, dancing, and cocktails as it cruised the waters of Mission Bay. Guests had the opportunity to explore the Catamaran Resort Hotel as the boat traveled to the other side of the bay to stop for sightseeing.

Saturday featured a chance to turn back the pages of history and relive San Diego's early days as it became the birthplace of California. In Old Town San Diego, guests experienced early Americana with its distinctive, "West Coast Style" Spanish flavor. On the Old Town Trolley Tours, guests toured the Coronado Islands, Balboa Park, the Gas Lamp District, Old Town, and other attractions.

The San Diego Aircraft Carrier Museum, which is located aboard the historic USS Midway aircraft carrier, alongside Navy Pier in downtown San Diego, was also one of the stops of Saturday's schedule. The Midway features more than 35 exhibits that bring the magic of naval aviation to life. Rich Dreisbach, ME '66, was able to give TSU alumni a special perspective because he served on the aircraft carrier. The four hour tour documented the ships history from WWII to the Desert Storm War.

Saturday night concluded with a specially prepared alumni dinner for TSU alumni and friends. Twenty-four were present at the evening's festivities, including special guests, James and Kathy Jelley. Join TSU on their next getaway as they cruise to the Caribbean on March 4-11, 2007.

Thursday's Scholarship Reception and Touchstone Dinner were a huge success. At the scholarship reception, students and their scholarship donors had a chance to mingle and meet each other. Over 100 guests were in attendance, showing the importance of our scholarship donors and the appreciation of our students.

At the Touchstone Dinner, 225 guests were welcomed. The plan to increase the capital campaign goal to $90 million was introduced. The announcement of the plan was followed by three check presentations. Steel Dynamics, Inc. of Fort Wayne presented a donation of $250,000. Bon Appétit donated a contribution of $300,000. An estate plan in the amount of $1 million was presented to the University from the late Jana Moak, a Board of Trustee member who passed away in May 2007. All donations will go toward the new University Center and Center for Online Technology and Resources. At the same dinner, it was announced that Tri-State University received a grant for $500,000 from the National Science Foundation (NSF). The grant is in support of a project entitled, "Academic, Mentoring, and Financial Support for Upperclass Students in STEM Disciplines," which will award scholarships to undergraduates in engineering, science, math, and technology.

Pillar of Success
Drs. Ralph and Sheri Trine were awarded the Pillar of Success at Thursday's Touchstone Dinner. The couple, who have been long-time supporters of TSU, were honored for their years of dedicated service. Through the years, the Trines donated funds for countless projects, including the Trine Welcome Center, Fort Wayne campus décor, and the Trine Guest cottage. A special video was presented in honor of their contributions. The couple's family was in attendance to congratulate them on their award.

A total of 311 guests were in attendance at the event, making the dinner the highest attended in TSU history.

Board of Trustees
Board of Trustees committee meetings were held in the morning with the annual Board of Trustee meeting held at Witmer Clubhouse on Friday afternoon. Several former trustees were in attendance as special guests: Dr. Lee Forman, Mr. Wayne Larson, and Mr. Paul Kahlenbeck. Dr. Winston Porter was appointed as the newest Board of Trustees member. In addition, the board plans to raise over $600,000 for the capital campaign. The meeting was adjourned after a presentation on the importance of planned giving benefits.

16TH ANNUAL TSU ALUMNI & fRIENDS SCHOLARSHIP GOLF OUTING

The 16th Annual TSU Alumni & Friends Golf Outing was touted as a great success. Nearly 200 alumni and friends joined in Tri-State University’s 16th Annual Alumni and Friends Golf Outing to raise over $42,000. The funds will be used to benefit the University’s scholarship endeavors.

According to Allen Keen, Director of Annual Giving and Regional Campaigns, this year’s attendance was one of the best in recent years.

"The University was proud to once again host a community-wide event,” said Keen. “The proceeds will benefit students pursuing a college education, which, in turn, brings money back into our community. The golf outing was a huge success and would not have been possible without the overwhelming support of local businesses and industry, as well as TSU’s alumni and friends. Their generous contributions will go a long way in ensuring our students with opportunities for lifelong learning. I would like to thank all of you—the sponsors, the community, our supporters, the golfers, and the volunteers—for your generous support of our mission and for investing in the future and in the students of TSU."

The golf outing was held at Tri-State’s own Zollner Golf Course, which featured 18-holes of golf, lunch, dinner, and an award’s program.

Tri-State University would like to thank the following businesses for their support: AMI Investment Management, Jim Ingledue Construction, and Design Collaborative as eagle sponsors. American Sealants, H.E. Johnson & Son Funeral Home, ABZ Realty, Bon Appetit, and Schrader Real Estate & Auction Company (by Richard Williams) contributed as birdie sponsors. Fifth Third Bank sponsored the day’s luncheon. The dinner sponsorship was courtesy of Frank Hall & Hall Bros. Transportation.

The winning team was composed of four alumni. Bob Shearer, Liz Brown, Sarah Brown, and Justin Howard won by one stroke with a score of 55. The Jim Ingledue Construction team finished in second place at the two-flight scramble.

"Due to the increased demand in support and participation, next year’s outing will again consist of a morning and afternoon flight,” added Keen. “Each flight will be limited to 144 golfers, so early registration is advised.”

In addition to the day’s traditional events, the first annual Sig Cup Golf Tournament was played between four teams from the Kappa Sigma and Alpha Sigma Phi Fraternity. Kappa Sigma Fraternity won the two-day event, which started at the Alumni & Friends event held at Zollner Golf Course and finished at Glendarin Hills Golf Club. A total of $1,000 was raised to go into the winning fraternity’s scholarship fund. Plans are already underway for next year to include additional teams and fraternities.

3rd annual scholarship gala, February 11, 2006

Tri-State University’s third annual scholarship gala was a huge success thanks to the community, friends, alumni, and faculty and staff of TSU.  Last weekend’s gala set another record with $63,000 raised for student scholarships. This amount tops last year’s record by $3,000.

“We are fortunate to have a supportive community of friends and alumni who participate in this event,” said Melanie Brooks, TSU gala co-host. “We are grateful for the generosity of all the local individuals and businesses that provided support for the auction items. The silent and live auctions brought excitement to the event and helped boost the overall scholarship fund. This could not have been possible without the hard work and support of the gala committee, TSU students, faculty and staff.”

One highlight of the evening were the four live auctions led by State Senator Dennis Kruse. The live auctions brought in over $10,000 towards institutional scholarships. Also on hand were Kruse’s wife, Kay, and State Representative and Mrs. Dick Dodge.

In addition to the silent and live auctions, attendees sampled wine provided by Visentin Wine and Spirits, and enjoyed the sounds of the Hillsdale College Contemporary Jazz Band, which performed throughout the night.  The gala was hosted by Dr. and Mrs. Earl D. Brooks II and Drs. Ralph and Sheri Trine.

Each year, TSU awards over $7.5 million in institutional scholarships to support students who attend the Angola campus.

Homecoming 2005: Truly a “Celebration of Success”
Photo Gallery
Tri-State University hosted one of the most memorable homecomings in its 121 year history with our “Celebration of Success.” This exciting weekend included the public announcement of the capital campaign. Both Touchstone and Homecoming dinners were kicked off with a Champaign toast where Dr. Brooks proudly announced the success of being over $48 million dollars and on their way to raise $70 million to coincide with the 125th Anniversary of Tri-State University. Events followed throughout the weekend as we held a groundbreaking for the new University Center and Center for Technology and Online Resources. Dedications of the newly renovated Jannen Baseball Field, the newly named Guilford Laboratory and the latest addition to TSU Campus Village, the Ingledue Villas and those were just some of the weekend's highlights. Tri-State University also welcomed back the class of 1955 in unprecedented numbers; we celebrated the 90th Birthday of Dr. John J. McKetta Jr. in style with a cake fit for a king, the Tri-State University cheerleaders cheered on the TSU football team and we ended the weekend with a well deserved 5th quarter where alumni gathered nostalgia to reconnect and listen to the award winning band.
