Bio: Dr. Dolores Tichenor is the assistant vice president for Study Abroad, the director of institutional planning and analysis, and a professor of mathematics. She has a doctorate in statistics from the University of Missouri-Rolla, a master’s degree in mathematics from Purdue University, and a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Mundelein College. Over the past twelve years, Tichenor has written and developed grant proposals that provided Tri-State University more $3.5 million in grants from various foundations and corporations. She has also received various teaching awards, including the Helen Smith McKetta Excellence in Teaching Award in 1990, the Barrenbrugge Award for Excellence in Teaching in 1993, Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers in 1994, 1999, 2004, and 2006 and the Jannen Renaissance Scholar Award in 2004.

She has taught sixteen different mathematics courses and three computer science courses at Tri-State University. Tichenor has served as a Reader for the Free Response portion of the Advanced Placement Calculus exam for ten years. During the summer of 1996, Tichenor taught statistics at Mara Community College in Kuantan, Malaysia. Her interest and research in genealogy led her to travel to the villages in Europe where her four grandparents were born. She has taught the research techniques for genealogy in HNR 401 Humanities Honor Seminar on two occasions. The course helps students to begin their genealogical research for their own family.

Her love of travel and her belief that Tri-State University students should have more opportunities to travel overseas led her to develop four additional HNR 401 courses—Vienna: Castles, Cathedrals, and Culture (spring 2005) ; Normandy and Paris: D-Day, Art, and Architecture (spring 2006); Berlin, WW II, the Cold War (spring 2007), and Vienna, Haydn and the Habsburgs (spring 2008). These courses include a trip over TSU’s spring break.

Tichenor is a long-time member of the Board of Directors of the Steuben County Literacy Coalition and currently serves as treasurer. She is a member of the Cameron Memorial Hospital Foundation Board of Directors. She serves on the Humanities Committee of the Steuben County Community Foundation and as the Steuben County (one of nine counties) representative to the Regional Arts Advisory Council. She is a member of the Mathematical Association of America and has served in many capacities, including chair of the Indiana Section.
