Tri-State Men’s Basketball Defeated by Calvin College 

The Tri-State University men’s basketball team was defeated 111-106 by Calvin College in their final game of the season.  Tri-State ends their season with a record of 12-13. 

The Thunder once again broke their season record of three point shots attempted in a game with 66.  Tri-State converted on 26 of those three point shots for 39% in the game.  Freshman Britain Flowers and Dwight Brace led the way for the Thunder.  Flowers had 24 points and six steals.  Brace added 20 points, five assists, and four steals.  Sophomore Micah Williams contributed 18 points, seven rebounds, and seven assists.  Rounding out the double figure scoring for Tri-State was senior Luke Amstutz with 12 points and junior Brandon Appleton had 11 points. 

February 19

Thunder Men Win Battle Against Olivet College 

The Tri-State University men’s basketball team defeated Olivet College 102-97.  The Thunder broke their own record of three point shot attempts with 65.  Tri-State connected on 18 of their three point attempts. 

Aaron Rehrer was 8-18 from behind the three point arc on his way to game high honors of 25 points.  Micah Williams had 24 points and Luke Amstutz rounded out the double figure scoring with 16 points.  Brandon O’Leary led Tri-State with 10 rebounds and chipped in nine rebounds.  Brandon Appleton passed out seven assists, to go with seven points, and six rebounds.

Steve Johnson led Olivet with 22 points on 11-13 shooting.  Dan Bonnell added 18 points for the Comets.

Tri-State improves their season record to 12-12, while Olivet drops their record to 10-14.  The Thunder return to action Saturday, February 21st at home against Calvin College for their last game of the season.  Tip-off is scheduled for 3:00 PM.

February 16

Tri-State Men’s Basketball Squeak Out Win over Kalamazoo 

The Tri-State University men’s basketball team earned a one point victory over Kalamazoo College 100-99.  The Thunder overcame a 25-11 defecit seven minutes into the game to take a five point halftime lead.  Kalamazoo committed 15 first half turnovers, which the Thunder converted into 19 points.  For the game, Tri-State converted 25 Kalamazoo turnovers into 36 points. 

Britain Flowers led the Thunder in scoring with 19 points.  Brandon Appleton controlled the offense with 14 points and nine assists.  Also scoring in double figures for Tri-State was Brandon O’Leary (17), Luke Amstutz (14), and Micah Williams (11).

Tri-State improves their season record to 11-12.  Kalamazoo’s record is now 7-16 on the season.  The Thunder returns to action at home Wednesday, February 18th against Olivet College.

Amstutz Reaches 1,000 Point Milestone 

Tri-State University senior guard Luke Amstutz becomes the 36th Thunder player to reach the 1,000 point milestone.  Amstutz scored his 1,000th point on a three point basket with 15 minutes remaining in an 87-84 loss to Albion College.  He now has 1,008 points in his career with two three games remaining.  This goal has been achieved even though Amstutz has missed 17 games in his career due to injuries.  Amstutz scored 200 points his freshman year, 292 points his sophomore year, 216 points his junior year, and 300 points so far in his senior season.  He is averaging 13.6 points per game in his senior season.  Tri-State has compiled a record of 52-69 over the past four seasons. 

February 12

Tri-State Men’s Basketball Falls to Albion College  

The Tri-State University men’s basketball team let a one point halftime lead slip away in an 87-84 loss to Albion College.  Tri-State drops their season record to 10-12 and Albion College improves to 16-6.

Senior guard Luke Amstutz broke the 1,000 point mark with 12 points.  Amstutz now has 1.008 points in his collegiate career. Brandon O’Leary recorded a double-double for the Thunder with 10 points and 12 rebounds.  Aaron Rehrer had game high scoring honors with 17 points and Micah Williams added 12 points.  Brandon Appleton handed out 11 assists.

The Thunder return to action on Saturday, February 14th for their final away game of the season at Kalamazoo College.  The game is scheduled to tip-off at 3:00 PM.

February 7

Tri-State Men’s Basketball Holds off Adrian Comeback 

The Tri-State University men’s basketball team defeated Adrian College 117-106.  The Thunder had a 24 point lead in the midway through the second half which Adrian cut to five points with three minutes remaining.  The Thunder defense forced Adrian into 34 turnovers and converted those turnovers into 37 points. 

Luke Amstutz paved the way for the Thunder with 31 points on seven for nine shooting from behind the three-point line.  Britain Flowers chipped in 22 points.  Brandon Appleton led the team in rebounds and assists with six apiece. 

Tri-State returns to action Wednesday, February 11th at Albion College.  Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 PM.

February 5

Tri-State Men’s Basketball Uses Hot First Half to Hold off Alma College 

The Tri-State University men’s basketball team used a 72-57 first half to hold of Alma College 106-98.  Tri-State used 60% shooting in the first half to gain their lead, but only managed to shoot 26% in the second half.  Tri-State’s record is now 9-11 on the season.

Micah Williams led the way for the Thunder with 27 points on 10-15 shooting with 6-10 from behind the arc.  Williams also led the team in rebounds with seven and had six steals.  Aaron Rehrer chipped in with 17 points.  Brandon Appleton had 15 points and five assists.

Alma College was led by Anthony Jones with 24 points and Eric Jones with 23 points and 11 rebounds.  Alma drops their season record to 2-18.

February 2

Hope Fights Off Thunder in OT 

The Tri-State University men’s basketball team suffered a tough 116-110 defeat in overtime to Hope College.  Tri-State held a nine point lead at halftime after shooting 61% from the field.

Four Thunder players scored in double figures with Luke Amstutz leading the way with 25 points.  Micah Williams and Brandon O’Leary each added 18 points.  Brandon Appleton chipped in with 13 points and seven assists. 

Greg Immink and Andy Phillips each had 22 points to lead Hope College.  Phillips also had 10 rebounds.

Tri-State drops their season record to 8-11 and Hope improves to 16-3.  The Thunder return to action on Wednesday, February 4th at Alma College.

January 29

Tri-State Men’s Basketball Defeated by Calvin College

The Tri-State University men’s basketball team was defeated by Calvin College 100-81.  Calvin held a 48-35 halftime lead and did not let up in the second half.  Calvin dominated on the boards, out rebounding the Thunder 62-27.    Tri-State drops their season record to 8-10, and Calvin improves to 11-7. 

Luke Amstutz led the Thunder scoring with 16 points.  Micah Williams contributed 12 points and four rebounds. 

Dan Aultman led Calvin’s offensive attack with 24 points.  Ryan Smalligan had a game high nine rebounds for Calvin. 

Tri-State returns to action at home on Saturday, January 31st as they take on Hope College.

January 26

Tri-State Men’s Basketball Victorious Against Olivet 

The Tri-State University men’s basketball team defeated Olivet College 120-112.  The Thunder’s high powered offense rolls to score over 100 points for the seventh time this season.  Tri-State held onto their victory despite shooting 19-42 from the free throw line. 

Luke Amstutz led the Thunder in scoring with 25 points.  Aaron Rehrer had 19 points, while Brandon O’Leary contributed 17 points and nine rebounds.  Micah Williams and Brandon Appleton each dished out five assists.

Olivet College was led by De’Andre Pruitt with 25 points and Richard Britton with 20 points.  Olivet College drops to 9-8 on the season.

The Thunder improve their record to 8-9.  The men return to action Wednesday, January 28th at Calvin College.  

January 21

Men’s Basketball Unable to Hold Lead

The Tri-State University men’s basketball team let an eight point halftime lead slip away against Kalamazoo College.  Kalamazoo outscored the Thunder 51-36 in the second half on their way to a 92-85 victory.  Kalamazoo took advantage of Tri-State’s poor shooting (33%) by shooting 57% from the field. 

Brandon O’Leary led four Thunder players in double figures with 22 points.  Luke Amstutz added 12 points, Britain Flowers had 11 points and nine rebounds, and Aaron Rehrer chipped in with 11 points.  Brandon Appleton dished out six assists for the Thunder.  Tri-State drops their season record to 7-9.

Tony Wichmann paved the way for the Hornets with 32 points and 13 rebounds.  Kalamazoo improves their record to 6-10.

Tri-State returns to the road for their next match-up of the season on Saturday, January 24th at Olivet College.  The game is scheduled to begin at 3:00 PM.

January 20

I.P.F.W. Men’s Basketball Holds Off Thunder

         The Tri-State University men’s basketball team dropped a close 93-81 decision to NCAA Division I Indiana-Purdue University Fort Wayne on Monday. The Thunder trailed the Mastadons by 5 at halftime but could not overcome 27% field goal shooting in the 2nd half. Brandon O’Leary continued his solid play with 22 points and six rebounds on 6 for 15 shooting. Micah Williams added 18 points and Britain Flowers tossed in 15 points for the Thunder. Tri-State is now 7-8 overall and will host Kalamazoo College on Wednesday at 7:30 PM. 

January 17

Tri-State University Men’s Basketball Team Out Muscled in 108-94 Loss to Albion College.

     The Tri-State Men’s Basketball Team was out muscled by Albion College in a 108-94 loss.  Albion College Scored 70 points in the paint compared to Tri-State scoring only 22 points in the paint.  The game was a close game until Albion pulled away from Tri- State in the second half.  The Bruins outscored the Thunder 54 to 42 in the second half. 

The Thunder were lead by Micah Williams with 21 points, also in double figures for the Thunder were Brandon Appleton (14), Luke Amstutz (11) and Aaron Rehrer (10). 

Albion College had six players in double figures for the game leading the way was Joe Finland with 18 points. 

The next game for the Thunder will be Monday night as they take on IPFW at 7:00. The game will be played at the Fort Wayne War Memorial Coliseum. 

 

January 15

Tri-State Men’s Basketball Defeats Adrian College 

The Tri-State University men’s basketball team defeated Adrian College 123-96 in a hard fought battle. Tri-State improves their record to 7-6, while Adrian falls to 7-6. 

The Thunder shot 46% from the three-point line on 19-41 shooting.  Tri-State also held an advantage at the free throw line in shooting 28-41, compared to Adrian’s 7-14.  Brandon O’Leary and Britain Flowers led the Thunder in scoring with 21 points apiece.  Flowers also led the team in rebounds with eight.  Also scoring in double figures for the Thunder was Micah Williams (18), Eric Koncz (17), and Luke Amstutz (16).  Brandon Appleton dished out seven assists for Tri-State.

The Thunder return to action at home on Saturday, January 17th against Albion College.

January 10

Tri-State Out Lasts Alma for a Thrilling Win.

The Tri-State University Men’s Basketball team out lasted a tough Alma team for a thrilling 95-89 victory.  The game was back and fourth from the tip off with neither team having a lead larger then 11 points, there were five ties and six lead changes in the game. 

Tri- State was lead by Aaron Rehrer with 16 points, Brandon O’Leary had 15 points and 10 rebounds and Britain Flowers had 15 points and six steals. 

Alma was lead by Eric Jones with 21 points and Anthony Jones chipped in 17 points.

The next game for Tri-State University will be Wednesday January 14th as they travel to Adrian for a 7: 30 tip off. 

 

January 8

Tri-State Men’s Basketball Falls To #11 Hope College

             The Tri-State University men’s basketball team fell to top ranked Hope College on Wednesday 109-93. Hope College is currently ranked #11 in the NCAA Division III.

The Thunder took a 53-50 lead into halftime but could not overcome 28% field goal shooting in the 2nd half. Senior Luke Amstutz led the way for the Thunder with 17 points. Micah Williams chipped in with 15 points and Brandon O’Leary added 13 points and nine rebounds. Andy Phillips led Hope College with 45 points and 16 rebounds.

The loss drops the Thunder to 5-6 on the season. They will return to action this Saturday against Alma College at 3:00 PM at Hershey Hall.

January 5

Tri-State Men’s Basketball Victorious at Conseco Fieldhouse  

The Tri-State University men’s basketball team defeated the University of Saint Francis 100-98 at Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.  Tri-State improved to 5-5 on the season.  Saint Francis dropped to 9-9 on the season

Brandon O’Leary led the way for the Thunder with 26 points and four steals.  O’Leary shot 10-14 from the field and 5-8 from the free throw line.  Four other Thunder players scored in double figures, Luke Amstutz (17), Britain Flowers (12), Brandon Appleton (10), and Dwight Brace (10).  Appleton also dished out six assists and led the team with five rebounds.

Tri-State returns to action Wednesday, January 7th at Hope College.  Game time is scheduled for 7:30 PM.

December 30

Tri-State Men’s Basketball Fights Hard Against Central Michigan 

The Tri-State University men’s basketball team was defeated by NCAA Division I Central Michigan 124-103.  Tri-State’s record is now 4-5 on the season. 

The Thunder could not stop the hot shooting of Central as the shot 62% from the field for the game.  Tri-State shot 50% for the game.  The Thunder had five players score in double figures, led by Brandon O’Leary with 20 points and Micah Williams with 19 points.  Luke Amstutz added 17 points.  Aaron Rehrer and Britain Flowers had 13 and 12 points respectively.  Flowers also added four assists. 

Tri-State returns to action Saturday, January 3rd at Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, where they will take on the University of Saint Francis.  

December 23

Tri-State Men’s Basketball Evens Record at 4-4 

The Tri-State University men’s basketball team went 1-1 at the Marian College Holiday Tournament.  In the first game Indiana University South Bend defeated the Thunder by a score of 111-105.  Tri-State defeated NSW-Australia 108-96 in the consolation game. 

On the weekend, Micah Williams had 28 points and eight rebounds.  Luke Amstutz had 27 points and Bobby Arroyo added 25 points.  Dwight Brace had 22 points, while Brandon O’Leary had 17 points and 15 rebounds.  Bobby Arroyo made the all-tournament team. 

Tri-State returns to action, Tuesday December 30th at NCAA Division I Central Michigan.  

December 8

Tri-State Men’s Basketball Splits at Franklin College Tournament 

The Tri-State University men’s basketball team went 1-1 over the weekend at the Franklin College Tournament.  In the first game, Tri-State was defeated 83-66 by Marian College.  Tri-State defeated Principia 96-69 in the consolation game.

Against Marian, Aaron Rehrer led the Thunder attack with 23 points.  Brandon Appleton chipped in with eight points.  Micah Williams had six rebounds for Tri-State.

Tri-State had a balanced scoring attack in the consolation game against Principia.  Dwight Brace led the way with 20 points, while Micah Williams and Aaron Rehrer each added 12.  Eric Koncz had 11 points.  Rehrer and Brace each had five rebounds.  Brandon Appleton dished our eight assists.

Aaron Rehrer made the all-tournament team for the Thunder.  Tri-State is now 3-3 on the season.  The Thunder return to action December 19-20 at the Marion College Tourney. 

November 30

Tri-State Men’s Basketball Falls to IUPUI 

The Tri-State University men’s basketball team was defeated by Indiana University Purdue University of Indianapolis 112-60 on Saturday.  Tri-State was outscored in the paint 60-20 and was outrebounded 59-29. 

Eric Koncz led the way for the Thunder with 22 points and six rebounds coming off the bench.  Brandon O’Leary added seven rebounds.  Tri-State drops their season record to 2-2.  The Thunder return to action Friday and Saturday December 5th-6th at the Franklin College Tourney.

November 25

Tri-State Men’s Basketball beat Grace College  

          The Tri-State University men’s basketball team beat  Grace College 75-65.  The Thunder turned 25 Grace turnovers into 17 points.  The Thunder were lead by were lead by Aaron Rehrer with 16 points.  Micah Williams had 14 points, six assists and five steals for the Thunder.  Luke Amstutz chipped in 11 points and Eric Koncz added 10.  Grace College was lead by Dan Warrior with 16 points. 

 

November 22

Tri-State Men’s Basketball Team falls to Siena Heights

           The Tri-State University men’s basketball team fell to Siena Heights in the championship game of the Tri-State University Sixth Man Tournament 96-82.  The Thunder were lead by Micah Williams with 18 points, Eric Koncz and Brandon O’Leary had 17 apiece.  Siena Heights was lead by Tournament MVP Doug Gray with 18 points.  Micah Williams was named to the all tournament team from Tri-State University.  The next game for the Thunder will be November 25 as they host Grace College.

November 21

Tri-State Men’s Basketball runs past Marygrove 

            The Tri-State University men’s basketball team ran past Marygrove 117-83, in the opening game for both teams in Tri-State University’s Sixth Man Tournament.  The Thunder had a balanced offensive attack with five players scoring in double figures, led by Micah Williams and Luke Amstutz with 20 and 17 points respectively.  Freshmen Britain Flowers and Justin Guy started their careers by each scoring 15 points.  The Thunder broke two school records with their offensive display.  They shattered the old mark of 37 three point attempts in a game by putting up 44 three point shots, and they also broke the old record of 17 three point shots made in a game with 18 made in tonight’s game.  Marygrove was lead by Dennis Foster with 21 points.  The next game for the Thunder will be tomorrow night at 5:00.  They will take on Siena Heights in the championship game of the Tri-State University Sixth Man Tournament.
