Kurt Miller
Class of 2002
Major: Health Promotion and Recreational Programming

One of the keys to a successful life is to be able to make your avocation your vocation. Kurt Miller, a 2002 graduate from Tri-State University, has been using what he learned as a health promotion and recreational programming major in the “real world” as a personal trainer. Upon graduation, Kurt accepted an internship at the University of Notre Dame in their Strength and Conditioning Department in the spring of 2003. During this internship, he assisted in developing conditioning programs for a number of the university’s sports teams. His next position was in corporate fitness at Honda America in Anna, Ohio. For 2½ years, he spent his time doing fitness assessments on the employees of the company. Kurt is presently employed at Spiece Fitness, a large health and fitness facility in Fort Wayne, Indiana. In his position as an exercise physiologist, he spends his days performing basic health assessments on the members of the club. After having the member take a series of tests that include checking their heart rate, blood pressure, body fat, and filling out an extensive medical history and nutrition questionnaire, Kurt will design a program to fit the fitness level of the member. Kurt enjoys the variety of clients that he gets to meet daily because each of them offers a different challenge. He gets to work with those people who are looking to get in a little better shape and with the serious athlete who wants to get the most out of their performance. Although Kurt spends most of his time working with the members in an intimate one-on-one setting, he has also been given the opportunity to develop training programs with a number of high school teams in the Fort Wayne area.

As America faces the challenge of curtailing the growing health problems that face our “unfit” society, we will need many more “Kurt Millers” in the trenches to help educate our citizens to fight this battle. The purpose of the health promotion and recreational programming curriculum at Tri-State University is to give the student the tools to meet this need in our society.
