From the Chair

Dear Alumni and Friends,

I am pleased to report another outstanding year for the McKetta Department of Chemical Engineering at Tri-State University.  As we “officially” enter the new millennium, we are focusing on student accomplishments and looking forward to a very bright future!

Perhaps the department’s greatest accomplishment this past year was being named to the AIChE Student Chapter National Honor Roll (see newsletter insert).  This achievement demonstrates our commitment to student involvement at TSU.  Of the roughly 180 chemical engineering departments in the country, only 56 were chosen for this honor.  Congratulations to our AIChE advisor, Dr. Salim, and the student chapter officers.

Another highlight of this past year was our participation in the AICHE Student Regional Meeting in Madison, WI.  With a delegation of 20, we had the largest visiting contingent of the 11 schools represented, and we were the only private university in attendance.  Our students returned with many fond memories, including their victory in the ChemE Car Competition!

AIChE Plans for an Exciting Year

Tri-State University’s AIChE student chapter has been planning activities for the 2001-2002 school year.  Assisted by the professors, the AIChE officers have been busy scheduling events that will not only be enjoyable but also educational about the different areas of chemical engineering.  The officers were elected at the January 18, 2001, meeting.  All of the recently appointed officers are seniors this year, except the Student Senate Representative, sophomore Rob Sanner.  The president is Jen Anderson and her vice-president is Crystal Hardesty.  The secretary is Matt Walker and Vanessa Mahoney is treasurer.

Some of the activities planned for the fall semester are field trips to Dow Chemical and Johns Manville.  Throughout the year, there are also people who come and speak to the group about being a chemical engineer.  The tentative list of speakers for the fall semester include Eric Taylor and Heather Cassaday.  There are also activities planned throughout the year that encourage a closer relationship between the ChE students and faculty such as the fall picnic held at Dr. Salim’s house and the Christmas party at Dr. Wagner’s house.  Other meetings planned for the fall include the ChE Homecoming Tailgate and the annual Thunder Run.

The spring semester schedule is still very tentative at this point.  Two speakers are planned to attend meetings, and there are also plans to go on another field trip during the spring.  The AIChE Regional Meeting will be held in Ann Arbor, MI, on February 14-16, and there is going to be the ChE Spring Banquet at the end of the year.

Long-Range Goals/Future Plans

1.         Provide an outstanding industrially-oriented undergraduate chemical engineering program with an enrollment of ³100 total students of which one-third would be participating in the cooperative education program;

2.         Provide a faculty characterized by teaching excellence and regionally recognized industrial expertise;

3.         Develop an endowment for the department of $500,000;

4.         Develop programs of specialization, which reflect current societal needs (i.e. bio-engineering, material science) and denote emphases on diploma; and

5.         Play a leadership role in undergraduate teaching innovation and laboratory development.

Miscellaneous

With the graduation of 14 students this academic year and a modest attrition of 5 additional students, we will need to recruit 30 new students in Chemical Engineering for fall 2002 to recover to fall 2000 enrollment levels.

                        54 – 14 – 5 = 35 ChE students returning              35 + 30 new = 65 total

ChE students and faculty pose at Pharmacia                               AIChE field trip to National Starch

entrance after an AIChE field trip.
