From the Chair

Dear Alumni and Friends,

This has been a truly outstanding year for the Department of Chemical Engineering.  With many changes and additions taking place, we are looking forward to a bright future as we start this new year and the new century.

Fall 2000 is the third consecutive year of increasing enrollment in the department.  In fact, our growing enrollment has necessitated moving fourteen of the student computers into a single teaching classroom, with an attached laboratory being used as a student lounge.  This year’s incoming class is particularly notable in that two-thirds of these students were in the top 10% of their high school graduating class.  However, Tri-State remains a place where anyone willing to work hard may succeed.

Dr. John Wagner made two notable accomplishments.  John received the highest score of all chemical engineers on the Ohio Professional Engineer’s Exam, and he was also named the Dow Outstanding New Engineering Educator in the Illinois/Indiana region.  Dr. Majid Salim developed and championed the new sabbatical leave policy for TSU faculty, and I had the good fortune to be invited back to the National Science Foundation’s New Century Scholars Workshop at Stanford University.

Our students have also had an eventful year.  While the vast majority of sophomores and juniors spent their summer in

Help Us Grow

The Dr. John J. McKetta Dept. of Chemical Engineering is pleased to announce enrollment projections for Fall 2000 Semester.  Total ChE enrollment is now at 65 students.  This enrollment represents the largest number of students in the past 15 years!  This enrollment includes 19 freshmen, 20 sophomores, 15 juniors, and 11 seniors.  Additionally, the department has made great strides in the number of women enrolled in the department in recent years, with 50% of the incoming students now being female.

However, we have no plans to stop here, and this is where you can help us . . .

Identify a high school senior that you know who is interested in math and science (son, daughter, niece, nephew, grandchild, neighbor, friend), then carry out one of the following three options:

1.      If interested in chemistry, I would personally like to contact them.  Please call (219-665-4224) or email me at finleyd@tristate.edu with their name and contact information (phone, email, address).

2.      Provide this information to TSU’s admissions department at 665-4132 or admissions@tristate.edu

3.      Ask the high school senior to visit the TSU website at http://www.tristate.edu

Thanks in advance for your assistance in exposing this student to the opportunities at TSU!
