Summer Internships 2002 Main Page

I worked for a company by the name of Central Soya.  This company’s headquarters is located in Fort Wayne, Indiana with eight processing plants located in Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio.  The company’s main objective is to process soybeans producing products such as: vegetable oil, soy protein, grain meal, grain hulls, lecithin, and specialty oil blends like shortening and partially hydrogenated margarine oils.

My primary objective for employment at Central Soya was to assist with the building of a new oil refinery plant in Morristown, Indiana.  I worked at Central Soya for a total of twelve months expanding over the course of two years (summer of 2001 and January – August 2002).  During this period of time, I performed various tasks for the company but concentrated mostly on process engineering.  My office was located in Fort Wayne, Indiana; however, I conducted several tests at other Central Soya plants as well as being relocated to the Morristown, Indiana, plant for construction.

The summer of 2001 I worked on the project engineering side of Morristown, Indiana.  My objective was to ensure all the individual pieces of the flow made it to the plant for installation.  Under this task, I ordered pumps, purchased valves and fittings, defined specifications for pipe, designed air flow for automatic valves, designated part numbers to unit operations in the flow diagrams, and created line schedules.  From January 2002 to August 2002, I worked on the process engineering side.  Tasks that I accomplished  successfully were: designing and  purchasing two cooling towers for the refinery, DTDC design and tray efficiency study, heat recovery from various heat generating sources,  directing hexane filtration test trials with various company’s products, simulating process operations in laboratory, and assisted in the building of the refinery at Morristown, Indiana.

Central Soya has been a tremendous learning experience.  By doing the co-op program, I have gained knowledge of not only unit operations, but soybean processing not many my age would possess.  I have used my education from Tri-State University to guide my decisions as well as learned from the many mistakes I made at Central Soya.  Central Soya is a great company to work for and I own much of my educational experience to them.
