Summer Internships 2003 Main Page

This summer I worked as an intern for Univertical Corp. here in Angola.  While there I did many different projects of varying difficulty.  These projects were usually performed for the chemical engineer, Chris Pontorno, or the chemist, Dr. Rob Berger.  A number of these projects follow.

I performed different experiments to try and separate the left over material from a previous stannous sulfate process.  This mixture of copper and tin and needed to be separated, so that the percentages of each component could be determined.  This information was needed so that a buyer could be found for this leftover material.  In addition I worked on an old water deionization unit to get it working so that we could send it to China for the new plant being built there.  I also assembled the piping system for the new HCl tank that had been installed, along with pressure and vacuum relief for the tank along with an air actuated valve going to the pump.

During the summer I used and worked with several types of filters including filter presses and sparkler filters.  I took apart and reconditioned several sparkler filters that were to be sent to the China plant.  I learned how to properly run an AA to perform ppm impurity analysis, along with several different titrations to find whether copper nickel and acid specifications were being met.  I also did some work with the ISO certification and audit that occurred while I was there.  I did experiments to find the best way to precipitate solids out of wastewater from a product tumbler.  This wastewater contained nickel and iron which needed to be precipitated to fall below the upper limits that could be discharged.  This application was unique in that the recovered nickel could be used for a process that had iron limits.  Therefore, the nickel and iron needed to be precipitated separately.  I worked on an outside containment pit project.  For this project the reactors needed to be lifted with a crane and liner placed underneath.  After the tanks were set back down the pits were ready for Norman Stein to finish installing the liners.  I even made up batches of several different chemicals produced which gave me an understanding of the reactions taking place with the production of these specialty chemicals.
