Becoming a Tutor

Tutor responsibilities:

  • To offer academic and study skills assistance to students.
  • To establish and maintain clear lines of communication with those they tutor.
  • To support TSU Learning Center policies.
  • To complete weekly student progress reports.
  • To maintain accurate tutoring records.
  • To attend all required training sessions.

Be sure to complete the following steps:

  • Complete the Tutor Application. These forms are available in Academic Support Services, 213 Taylor Hall.
  • Have your academic advisor or a professor who teaches the course(s) for which you desire to tutor send a recommendation by e-mail to wentworthk@tristate.edu  or by phone to 260.665.4853.
  • Submit the application in person to Kathie Wentworth, M.Ed., Academic Support Services Director, in 213 Taylor Hall.
  • Complete the online tutor training class. This will take about 10 hours and should be completed the semester before you begin tutoring.
  • Complete an individual meeting with the Academic Support Services Director.
  • Attend a group tutoring meeting at the beginning of the semester. (View tutor training videos.)
  • Complete a TSU Personnel Authorization Form for Student Payroll.
Complete appropriate tax forms—including a W-4 and an I-9—with Cathy Faye in Human Resources in the lower level of Forman Hall. You must bring a picture ID other than your TSU student ID—a driver’s license will work as will your passport—and either your social security card or your birth certificate to Human Resources when you complete these forms. You will need to apply for and receive a Social Security card before you can begin tutoring. Failure to comply with these regulations will result in your NOT being paid.
  • Notify Kathie Wentworth, M.Ed., Academic Support Services Director, when you have completed all of your paperwork and are ready to begin tutoring at wentworthk@tristate.edu or 260.665.4853.
  • Be assigned regular TSU Learning Center work hours.
  • Occasionally, you may be asked to tutor a student outside of your regular TSU Learning Center work hours. When doing individual tutoring outside of TSU Learning Center hours, call or e-mail the student and arrange to meet him/her for tutoring session at the TSU Learning Center, at the library, or in one of the study lounges in the departments within 24 hours of agreeing to tutor this student.  All tutoring takes place in a public place on campus. Have the student initial your time sheet.  Report to Kathie Wentworth, M.Ed., Academic Support Services Director, at 260.665.4853 or by e-mail at wentworthk@tristate.edu when your first tutoring session with each tutee is completed.
  • Complete Student Bi-Weekly Time Sheet—be sure to sign. These forms are due every other Friday at noon. Payroll checks will be available in the mailroom in the lobby of Stewart Hall the following Friday.
  • Complete the Tutee Progress Report on the back of the Tutor Request Form for each tutoring session.
  • Call Kathie Wentworth, M.Ed., Academic Support Services Director, at 260.665.4853 if you have any questions.

The Tri-State University tutor training program is certified by the College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA). Tutors who complete Tutor Training and tutor for 25 hours will receive CRLA Tutoring Certificates.
