Building Evacuation

Before

  • Know the emergency number..911.
  • Locate your nearest exit, and find an alternate exit in case the primary exit is blocked.
  • Know the safe assembly location of your residence hall floor.

During

  • Emergency Action
    • When the alarm sounds continuously in the building or when instructed by emergency personnel or University officials, leave the building immediately.
    • Ask others in the building if they require help to evacuate.  Help them if it is safe to do so.
    • Do not use elevators unless emergency personnel instruct use.  Use the stairways.
    • Walk, do not run - stay calm.
    • Do not push or crowd.
  • Emergency Acton for Disabled People
    • If there is a telephone nearby, call 911 and tell the emergency dispatcher where you are or where you will be waiting.
    • Move to an exterior enclosed stairwell.
    • Request persons leaving the building to notify the fire department of your location.

After

  • Remain at the safe assembly location until you are notified by emergency personnel or University officials that it is safe to return.
  • If in the residence halls, find the safe assembly location of your floor and remain with those students.
