His technical specialty is signal processing
and communication systems, and is also published and past
editor of IEEE Technology and Society magazine. Dr. Whelchel
is the audio-frequency expert on the department. He worked
for the Navy's SONAR program before coming to Tri-State University.
His recent design projects include secure communications and
a web-connected building monitor with wireless sensors. Dr.
Whelchel is a native Hoosier farm-boy, now a guitarist, a
member of the TSU Humanities Institute, and a frequent and
thoughtful watcher of films.

and Computer Engineering teach courses for the computer
engineers and some courses required for both electrical
and computer engineers:
