The Gerald H. Moore Process Technology Laboratory
is a two-level, 1806 square foot pilot plant that includes a distillation
column, double-effect evaporator, liquid-liquid extraction unit,
absorption column, heated batch reactor, mixing tank, and fluidized
bed demonstration.
The Polymers Processing Laboratory is located
in the TSU Technology Center north of campus. This laboratory
houses an extruder, a post-former, an injection molder, two-roll
mill, small-scale vacuum thermo former, and a tensile testing
apparatus.
The Unit Operations Laboratory is a 992 square
foot space that holds the fluid flow apparatus, double-pipe heat
exchanger, composition experiment, cooling tower, kinetics experiment
(CSTR and PFR), three-column manometer, packed column, and the
process controls system with computer data acquisition.
The Biochemical Engineering Laboratory, located
in the John G. Best Hall of Science, has an impressive array of
equipment, including incubators, centrifuges, a thermocycler (polymerase
chain reaction), and a laminar flow hood. Analytical tools in
this 731 square foot laboratory include an HPLC (high performance
liquid chromatography), an ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometer,
electrophoresis and chromatography equipment, and an array of
microscopes.
The Chemical Engineering Computer Laboratory
is 593 square foot space containing fourteen computers exclusively
for student use. A third of these computers are replaced with
new, state-of-the-art machines each year. Computers are loaded
with current versions of several software applications useful
in chemical process calculations including: ChemCad, MathCad,
Polymath, Control Station, PumpSel, ISC3, and MS Office suite.
The Dr. Raymond L. Porter Chemical Engineering Study
is 501 square foot room where students can work collaboratively
on homework and design projects. Several industry journals and
other references, including Perry’s Chemical Engineers
Handbook and the Handbook of Chemistry and Physics,
are available for student use. Also housed in the study are two
couches where students can relax as well as a microwave, refrigerator,
and a scanner/printer.
