Dr. Stanley L. Yoder
Associate Professor of Electrical Engineering
260.665.4196 | yoders@tristate.edu
Dr. Stephen G. Carr
Associate Professor of Electrical Engineering
260.665.4189 | carrs@tristate.edu
Dr. Lawrence E. Samuelson
Professor of Electrical Engineering
260.665.4192 | samuelsonl@tristate.edu
Dr. Robert J. Whelchel
Professor of Electrical Engineering

Dr. Sean Carroll
Associate Professor and Chair
B.S. (Vanderbilt University)
M.A., Ph.D. (Princeton University)

His technical specialties on the hardware side of computer engineering: embedded systems, control, and digital signal processing. At GE, he worked on long-distance radar processing, so that the direction and speed of approaching planes could be reflected off the ionosphere. The student projects he has overseen in the past few years include a three-lead EKG machine, building a low-speed NIC from microcontrollers, and low bit-rate Voice-over-IP. His teaching interest is in "discovery": teaching students to explore computer hardware for themselves, and navigating the conventional reference material for unfamiliar devices. Dr. Carroll's personal interest is also in discovery—he is an amateur naturalist and plantsman, and an avid reader and long-distance walker.

Dr. Stanley L. Yoder,
Associate Professor
B.S. (Tri-State University)
M.S. (Wichita State University)
Ph.D. (University of Notre Dame)

His technical specialty is software engineering: object-oriented design, and interface design. He worked in industry in the area of modem design. His recent course projects include writing code for Mario Brothers and Tetris Attack. Dr. Yoder's teaching interest is in project-based learning, allowing students to choose one long-term goal, and then teaching them to organize and coordinate individual effort to achieve success. Dr. Yoder's personal interests include fine carpentry and construction, and family trips to national parks and fishing spots.

The other three professors in the department of Electrical and Computer Engineering teach electives to the electrical engineers and also teach courses required for both electrical and computer engineers:

Dr. Stephen G. Carr,
Associate Professor
B.Sc. (University of Ulster)
Ph.D. (Queen's University
of Belfast)

His technical specialty is in circuits and electronics. Dr. Carr is our specialist in electric motors, and he has experience in microwave circuits as well. He has worked in design of machinery electromagnet wiring.

Dr. Larry E. Samuelson,
Professor
B.S. (Iowa State)
Ph.D. (Michigan State University)

Dr. Samuelson earned his Ph.D. in physics; his technical specialty is now electronics and measurement. He worked on fusion reactions at the Princeton Plasma Physics Project before coming to TSU.

Dr. Robert J. Whelchel,
Professor
B.S., M.S. (Purdue University)
Ph.D. (Mississippi State
University)

His technical specialty is signal processing and communication systems. Dr. Whelchel is the audio-frequency expert on the department. He worked for the Navy's SONAR program before coming to Tri-State University.
