The three key professors in Electrical Engineering
teach courses required for both electrical and computer engineers
and also teach electrical engineering electives:
Dr.
Stephen G. Carr
Associate Professor
B.Sc. (University of Ulster)
Ph.D. (Queen's University
of Belfast)
His technical specialty is in circuits and electronics. Dr. Carr
is our specialist in electric motors, and he has experience in
microwave circuits as well. He has worked in design of machinery
electromagnet wiring. He came to TSU from teaching at the University
of Virginia, and was Chair at Indiana Tech prior to that, so he
has broad experience of students and of facilities. Dr. Carr brings
an international, British flavor to our department and a different
slant on education that strengthens all our offerings.

Dr.
Larry E. Samuelson
B.S. (Iowa State)
Ph.D. (Michigan State University)
Dr. Samuelson earned his Ph.D. in physics; his technical specialty
is now electronics and measurement. He worked on fusion reactions
at the Princeton Plasma Physics Project before coming to TSU.
His design projects include a wireless weather station, adding
quadraphonic speaker control to PC speakers, and wind-tunnel instrumentation.
Dr. Samuelson is a musician, a PC gamer and an amateur meteorologist,
with over a decade of data on jet-stream patterns and global storms.

Dr.
Robert J. Whelchel
B.S., M.S. (Purdue University)
Ph.D. (Mississippi State
University)
His technical specialty is signal processing and communication
systems, and is also published and past editor of IEEE Technology
and Society magazine. Dr. Whelchel is the audio-frequency expert
on the department. He worked for the Navy's SONAR program before
coming to Tri-State University. His recent design projects include
secure communications and a web-connected building monitor with
wireless sensors. Dr. Whelchel is a native Hoosier farm-boy, now
a guitarist, a member of the TSU Humanities Institute, and a frequent
and thoughtful watcher of films.
The other two professors in the department of Electrical and Computer
Engineering teach courses for the computer engineers and some
courses required for both electrical and computer engineers:

Dr.
Sean Carroll
Associate Professor and Chair
B.S. (Vanderbilt University)
M.A., Ph.D. (Princeton University)
His technical specialties on the hardware side of computer engineering:
embedded systems, control, and digital signal processing. At GE,
he worked on long-distance radar processing, so that the direction
and speed of approaching planes could be seen as reflected off
the ionosphere.

Dr.
Stanley L. Yoder
Associate Professor
B.S. (Tri-State University)
M.S. (Wichita State University) Ph.D. (University of Notre Dame)
His technical specialty is software engineering: object-oriented
design, and interface design. He worked in industry in the design
of modems for Dr. Yoder's teaching interest is in project-based
learning, allowing students to choose one long-term goal, and
then teaching them to organize and coordinate individual effort
to achieve success.
