General
Engineering ... Exploring the Engineering Profession
Many people are interested in engineering as a career, but are
confused by the many different fields of engineering. To help
these students the Allen School of Engineering and Technology
admits engineering students who are undecided about a major into
the category General Engineering.
The General Engineering program allows students to make progress
towards an engineering degree while they are exploring the opportunities
afforded by the various engineering disciplines. General Engineering
is not a major, and students at TSU cannot earn a degree in General
Engineering.
All engineering programs require the same basic courses in mathematics,
science, and communication. Thus, the first year of study is common
for all engineers. Any specialized courses in a specific major
(such as Engineering Graphics), that are normally taken during
the freshman year, can be easily interchanged with social science
and humanities courses taken in the sophomore year.
General Engineering students are not required to select an engineering
major until they register for their fourth semester. This allows
more than two semesters to explore the vast field of engineering
and find the field that’s right for you.
What are the Engineering options available at TSU?
Bachelor of Science degrees are offered in the fields of chemical,
civil, computer, electrical, and mechanical engineering and in
engineering administration and design engineering technology.
The Master of Engineering degree provides an additional year of
design based, practice oriented education, with majors in civil
and mechanical engineering. Both mechanical engineering and civil
engineering offer five year programs, in which both the BS and
the Master of Engineering degrees are awarded after five academic
years and one summer of study.
In addition to these majors, minors are available in aeronautical,
architectural, bioprocess, environmental, and metallurgical engineering,
and in entrepreneurship and mathematics. These minors allow you
to concentrate your electives into a specific specialized area.
This additional specialization is denoted on the transcript.
