I had a senior design group take on an industry automation project to measure the diameter of cut wire.  It was very important that the wire was not larger than a given dimension.  The machine they designed automatically measured the wire, separated the good parts from the bad parts, reported the number of good and bad parts, and reported the total number of parts produced per hour.
