Mechatronics Autonomous Minesweeper

This contest was the final exam for the mechatronics class that I taught the fall of 2007.  The object of the contest was to find five white blocks, pick them up, and move them to the black edge of the contest field as quickly as possible. 

The students were all given the same base Rokenbok Transgripper toy car to begin their project and were not allowed to change the drive system.  They were required to take out the radio control and rely solely on the microprocessor to control the vehicle without any outside influences.  They were, of course, allowed to add sensors to find the block and detect black and white.  Penalties were assessed for touching blocks that were not picked up and for pushing blocks to the edge without picking them up.
