The following was provided by the Clay Syler Family, author unknown ?? perhaps Clay.
Simon Syler was born January 17, 1842 to Thomas Syler and Hosanna Leader in Holmes County Ohio. In early manhood he went to Bloomington, Illinois to learn the flour milling business. He was released from military duty by hiring a substitute. Returning to Ohio, he married Catherine Yoder on April 7, 1868.
Catherine Yoder was born near Shanesville, Ohio June 3, 1848.
After their marriage they moved to Bloomington, Ill where he was employed in a flour mill. Later they took up a homestead near Springfield Missouri. After clearing the land and building a new house, a soldier returning from the Civil War proved title to this land. Father received $200 in money and a small stallion in payment of the improvement he had made on the land. They then returned to Holmes County Ohio where he again returned to the milling business at Trail, Ohio. After several years here
he bought a farm in Pike Township, Knox County, Ohio.
In 1891 Simon Syler leased the Charles Mill, near Mansfield, Ohio in Ashland County, taking the oldest daughter Clara to keep house for him in a rented cottage. Later he purchased a farm of 40 acres and moved the family there. The farm adjoined the water power mill. The family then came there to live until 1898. An older son Ira died and he then decided to quit the milling business and return to farming. He sent Clara , Florence and Ivan to the farm he owned in Pike township, Knox County. Later he purchased a farm in Berlin Twp, one mile west and moved the rest of the family there. In 1905 he purchases what was know as the McIntire farm, near Ankenytown. At this farm the family lived until his death April 5, 1910 at the age of 68. Mother lived on this farm for four more years until her death August 20, 1914 at the age of 66 years. Both parents were buried at the church cemetery Owl Creek, near Ankeytown. They were the parents of 13 children: Clara, Evalena, Ella, Ira, George, Wilma, Barbara, Sina, Harvey, Ivan, Florence, Clay and Fern.
Clara was born August 18, 1869 in Bloomington, Illinois. She was married to Fred Barton March 27, 1907. Two sons were born to them -- Ray and Clay. Clara died of cancer June 6, 1923 at the age of 54.
Evalena ( Evelyn) was born in Holmes County Ohio, March 20, 1871 and died at the age of 18 months of membraneous croup. Burial was in Holmes county.
Ella was born in Bloomington, Illinois, March 1, 1873 and was married to Owen Opperman, January 1900. They had one son , Paul. One week following his birth, he died on January 29, 1901. Before her marriage she taught typing, shorthand and Bible in Manchester College at North Manchester, Indiana.
Ira was born January 11, 1875 at Trail Ohio and died April 3, 1897 near Mifflin at the age of 22years. He assisted his father in the milling business and was engaged to marry Hattie Applegate at the time of his death which was due to pneumonia and brain fever contracted after a session with the measles.
George was born at Trail, Ohio, December 16, 1876, and married Madie Hall May 19, 1900. He owned and aperated a flour mill at Marietta, Ohio and died there April 4, 1911. He had suffered for some time with a painful arthritis condition and died from complications. They had three children, Ivan, Helen, and Wilma.
Wilma was born March 1879 and died at the age of 7 years of what was called brain fever.
Barbara was born June 24, 1880 and married Perry Ernest, February 20, 1900. They operated farms in Knox County their entire lives. Five children were born to them: Retha, Harold, Mildred, Lorene and Claude. Barbara died of complications of old age October 31, 1966 .
Sina (Hosanah) was born September 12, 1883 and died at the age of 17 of Brights disease, January 29, 1901.
Harvey was born in Knox County, December 19, 1885 and was married to Wilma Robinson in June 1922. They had one daughter (adopted), Helen. Harvey operated the home farm until the time the estate was settled and spent the rest of his life in the elevator business in partnership with Clay and his nephew, Ivan. He died of cancer at the age of 66 on August 24, 1951.
Ivan was born in Pike townshiop, Knox County, May 30 , 1887 and was married to Edna Bechtel in October 1911. They were the parents fo two children – Wade and Rowena, and lived on the farm until time of his death December 13, 1913. He took his life by hanging.
Florence was born in Pike Township, September 27, 1889 and married J.C. Grubb December 21, 1910. They had six children – Bernese, Dwight, Catherine, Maxine, Rita and Carole. They lived on a farm near Ankeytown several years and moved to Silver Lake , Indiana in 1925 where J.C. owned and operated an elevator until his retirement.
Clay was born near Mifflin, Ohio, December 23, 1893. In June 1915 he married Dorothy Guynn of Indianapolis, Indiana. After his schooling he worked as a stenographer in Indianapolis Board of Trade and returned to Ankneytown, Ohio were he and Harvey operated the grain elevator. Later he returned to Indian and was in the elevator business in North Manchester until his retirement. One son Myron was born to them in Ankneytown. He married Marietta Hamaker in 1928 and she died in 1952. In 1954 he married Lorene Crow.
Fern was born near Mifflin, Ohio May 20, 1896. She married Dean Byerly of Decatur , Indiana, February 16, 1915. They were parents of two children – Eileen and Arden. They farmed near Decatur from many years and later moved ot the city where Dean engaged in the insurance business. She died June 7, 1949 from head injuries suffered when she fell into a grease pit at a garage. She was 53 years of age.
We do not know the exact cause of Simon Syler’s death, but believe it to be cancer. It was only mentioned in whispers at that time. We are not sure either of the cause of death of our mother, Catherine. She did suffer from diabetes, but was not bedridden when she died.

The following is an obituary … Death of George Walter Syler. George Walter Syler was born Dec 16, 1876 at Trail Ohio and departed this life April 4, 1911 at his home in Marietta, Ohio age 34 years, 4 months and 18 days. ON May 19, 1900 he was united in marriage to Miss Maydie Hall of Holmes county , to which union were born three children Ivan, Helen and Wilma ages respectively 9, 7, and 4 years. He received his early education in Hayesville Academy, near his home, also attending North Manchester College in Indiana. He had been in the flour milling business for a number of years as was at the head of the Marietta Milling Co. prior to the time when his
health began to fail.
Mr. Syler was prominent in the business and social affairs of his city
and was a man well posted on the current events of the day.
Although afflicted with a lingering disease, he bore his suffering with
great fortitude. He is survived by
his wife and three children, also by his mother, Catherine Syler , four sisters
viz: Clara Barton, Barbara Ernest, Florence Grubb and Fern Syler;
three brothers, Harvey, Ivan and Clay ,
and host of relatives.
