For Thunder athletes, it is no coincidence that academics, athletics
and achievement begin with “A.” Our athletes are competitors.
They play hard, but they also study hard, which is why more than
40 TSU student-athletes have been named Academic All-America.
As a member of the nation’s oldest conference (Michigan
Intercollegiate Athletic Association), with provisional membership
in NCAA Division III, TSU competes against some of the most successful
programs in the nation (16 NCAA championships in the last 30 years).
In 2004-2005, three players were recognized by the MIAA with
conference awards for their attitude, athleticism and academics:
Ben Shaw, men’s soccer, earned the Dr. Marvin A. Zuidema
Mental Attitude Award; Kyle Stoops, men’s baseball, earned
Pitcher of the Week for the Thunder’s first shutout in MIAA
play; and Mike Whitton, men’s tennis, earned the Lawrence
Green Award for his academic performance.
Our small campus means you are never far from all of our exciting
sports facilities: Hershey Hall, 4,000-seat gymnasium; Shive Field,
2,500-seat football stadium; Ketner Sports Center, all-purpose
indoor complex; Gettig Fitness Center; Zollner Golf Course; Jannen
Baseball Field; and softball field, soccer field, and tennis courts.
