TSU participates in National Engineers Week,

February 20-24

In support of National Engineers Week, Tri-State University’s Allen School of Engineering and Technology will be hosting events to educate students and adults about the industry.  The activities will take place during the week of February 20.

“We are excited to participate in National Engineers Week,” said Dr. Roger Hawks, dean of TSU’s Allen School of Engineering and Technology.  “The week is a great way for those in the engineering and technology industry to educate children, as well as adults, about the field and showcase the talents of our engineering school.”

Beginning Monday, February 20, TSU will be hosting the following events:

Monday, February 20 – The electrical and computer engineering department will host David Bowles of Spectrum Engineering.  He will speak about blackouts beginning at 4 p.m. in Fawick Room 221.

Tuesday, February 21 – The civil engineering department will conduct two presentations to Hendry Park Elementary fifth graders at 11 a.m.  The elementary students will also participate in a fun building contest using marshmallows, popsicle stick, and/or toothpicks.  The chemical engineering department will have a round table discussion on the history of chemical engineering education at 7 p.m. in Fawick 122.

Wednesday, February 22 – The mechanical engineering department is hosting an Engineering Quiz Show at 7:30 p.m. in Fawick 112/117.  Contestants will be asked questions from a variety of subjects including engineering economics, physics, chemistry, fluid mechanics, solid mechanics, engineering materials, and dynamics.  Contestants will participate in groups with cash prizes given to the winners.

Thursday, February 23 – The Society of Women Engineers are inviting middle school girls to TSU to learn about engineering and science.  The event will take place from 6 – 7:30 p.m. in Fawick 112/117.  Pizza, pop, and cookies will be served.  Those interested in attending should RSVP by noon on Wednesday, February 22 at 665.4266.

Engineers Week, a formal coalition of more than 75 engineering, professional, and technical societies and more than 50 corporations and government agencies, was founded in 1951 by the National Society of Professional Engineers.  The program is dedicated to ensuring a diverse and well-educated future engineering workforce by increasing understanding of and interest in engineering and technology careers among young students and by promoting pre-college literacy in math and science.  Engineers Week also raises public understanding and appreciation of engineers' contributions to society.  For more information on the National Engineers Week visit www.eweek.org.
