career services launching jobs site

Tri-State University students preparing to graduate or obtain an internship or co-op, as well as TSU alumni seeking jobs, can now take advantage of a new employment Web site created by TSU’s Career Services office.

By signing up with www.TSUCareerConnections.org, students and graduates can learn immediately of career opportunities, and upload resumés, reference letters and cover letters for a fast and professional response to job opportunities.

The office will connect students with the Web site, which is accessible at any time from any computer, said Career Services Director Linda Bateman. “Once students are registered, they can upload resumés, and Career Services will review them within 48 business hours and may suggest changes for effectiveness,” she said. Those resumes can then be added to a major-specific resume book for prospective employers. Students can then keep their approved resumés current by making their own updates.

The quick information transfer will be of great benefit to students. “They can search for jobs on the system and set up a job agent (feature) where any time a position is posted, they get an e-mail on that job,” Bateman said. Her office prefers that students use their TSU e-mail addresses.

The two components—employers and students/alumni—create “a way to communicate between the office and community and the companies and students,” Bateman said. Companies can go through an approval process to create their own presence on the site, by showing evidence of viable business operation. Companies which gain approval can manage their own sites, place their logos there, and accept applications there or through the Career Services office, Bateman said.

Community jobs will also be posted on the site, after Career Services identifies a proper fit for students in terms of pay, flexibility of hours, and longevity of the job. The site allows Bateman’s office to redirect time toward other important student services. “This frees Career Services to host career-related workshops, promote on-campus interviewing, and facilitate co-ops and internships,” she said.

Plans call for the development of a site where students can connect with mentors in their fields. Mentors will determine the parameters of the arrangement.

To register, students can visit the Career Services site at tristate.edu/careerservices for contact information. “Our office will promote the new jobs Web site around campus,” Bateman said.
