To underscore the problem of substandard housing and homelessness in America, Tri-State University’s chapter of Habitat for Humanity will sponsor a free showing of “The Pursuit of Happyness,” starring Will Smith, on March 28 at 7 p.m. in Fabiani Theatre. A discussion on homelessness and poverty, led by a TSU Habitat chapter representative, a Steuben County Habitat chapter member, representatives from Turning Point and Project Help, the county’s homeless shelter and food and clothing bank, and a TSU sociology department faculty member, will follow the film.
The events are part of Act, Speak, Build Week, in which student chapters of Habitat for Humanity International raise awareness of substandard housing conditions locally and globally. To draw attention to the event, TSU Habitat chapter members will construct a “shantytown” of cardboard boxes and post poverty statistics in the University Center. They will also distribute statistics in Whitney Commons during meal times.
The Steuben County Habitat chapter is also using the event to announce its acceptance of applications from families in need of a Habitat home. Brochures and applications will be available at the movie showing, by mailing a request to Steuben County Habitat for Humanity, P.O. Box 136, Angola, IN 46703, by calling chapter president Larry Keeler at 665.8055, or by e-mailing Cari Parrish at parrishproductions@verizon.net.
Habitat for Humanity is an organization dedicated to the elimination of substandard housing. Volunteers worldwide dedicate their time and talents to construct houses for families who demonstrate a reliable source of income, but who cannot afford adequate housing.
While the labor is donated, families pay back the materials cost on a payment schedule with a 0 percent interest loan. They also donate volunteer hours back to Habitat for Humanity. Habitat then uses funds collected from the loan to purchase more land and build more houses.
The public and those interested in providing housing for those who cannot afford it are invited to attend the free film and discussion.
