tsu celebrating dr. king's legacy

Tri-State University will celebrate the unique human rights legacy of the late Dr. Martin Luther King during its 18th annual Dr. Martin Luther King and Black History Month Celebration Feb. 7 at 7 p.m. in the University Center’s Fabiani Theatre.

Co-sponsored by the Multicultural Student Organization and the TSU Office of Student Success and Retention, the popular event will feature keynote speaker Luther Whitfield, pastor of New Covenant Worship Center in Fort Wayne, Ind., who will speak on the topic “Remember! Act! Celebrate!”

Whitfield also serves as executive director of Primetime Community Center in Fort Wayne, and as National Community Ministries consultant for Youth for Christ U.S.A. He is an experienced communicator who has developed a passion for young people through his 24 years of experience.

The event will also spotlight the Voices of Unity Youth Choir, under the direction of Marshall White, who will entertain with an energetic, passionate repertoire of music, including pieces from the gospel, contemporary Christian, inspirational, hip-hop, jazz, and blues genres. Made up of Fort Wayne-area children ranging in age from 8-20, the choir belongs to Fort Wayne’s Unity Performing Arts Foundation, distinguished as the first organization of its kind in Indiana to have an artistic focus on the soulful arts.

The remarkable and versatile choir was chosen as the opening act for Roberta Flack when she appeared at the Fort Wayne Embassy Theater in 2006. So powerful is their performance, the youth choir has been endorsed by the Indianapolis Colts, for whom they performed in the opening season. They performed again at the Colts’ playoff game on Jan. 13 in Indianapolis.

TSU students will also participate in the presentation.

The celebration of unity will conclude with appetizers and soft drinks. The event is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Deborah McHenry at 260.665.4509.
