$25,000 into new TSU major

Tri-State University’s new hospitality and tourism major will launch on strong footing in the fall, thanks to a $25,000 grant from the Franklin H. and Ruth L. Wells Foundation to TSU’s Ketner School of Business.

The four-year bachelor of science degree with hospitality and tourism management major will prepare students for the ever-growing and broad range of job opportunities in the travel and tourism industry.

The program was developed after researching similar programs at schools with growing hospitality and tourism programs. The expertise of local industry experts was sought in determining courses necessary for the program. A TSU Hospitality and Tourism Advisory Board of local people in the hospitality business will be incorporated into the program as a guideline to keep in touch with industry changes.

Job opportunities for hospitality and tourism management graduates include employment at hotels or restaurants, transportation or travel agencies, tour companies or tourist attractions, and the areas of leisure, recreation, and sport.

“This program will offer an opportunity for students to focus on the intricacies of the hospitality and tourism management and prepare them for numerous job opportunities available in the growing field of hospitality, travel, and tourism,” said Ketner School of Business Dean V.K. Sharma. “Our vision is to develop and offer a curriculum that will make Ketner School of Business one of the best to offer a bachelor of science with hospitality and tourism management major.”

TSU's support from the Wells Foundation recognizes the late Dr. Franklin H. Wells for his service as a member of the TSU Board of Trustees. Other projects receiving foundation support have included Taylor Hall’s Wells Theater, the renovation of Fawick Hall, the upgrade of engineering lab equipment, the Annual Fund, and Tri-State Middle College.

“Tri-State University has a long and rich history with the Franklin H. and Ruth L. Wells Foundation. We continue to be grateful for their ongoing support of over 20 years,” said TSU Director of Development Melanie Harmon.
