tsu math competition winners earn scholarships, cash prizes

Each student earned a $3,000 TSU scholarship, and Yoder recieved $1,000 to use in his classroom for math programs.

The team from Westview High School in LaGrange County bested all other high school mathematicians in Tri-State University’s 34th annual Math Competition held in Hershey Hall Feb. 6. This marked the first year TSU offered cash prizes to the instructors of the three winning teams, in addition to the traditional TSU scholarships for the students.

The Westview team of Andrew Lehman, Todd Richardson, Josh Hunsberger, and Adam Whitmer earned TSU scholarships of $3,000 each, and a prize of $1,000 went to their instructor, Ron Yoder, to use for high school math programs of his choice. The first place individual advanced winner, Yuanfei Miao of Quincy High School in Quincy, Mich., earned a $5,000 TSU scholarship. The first place individual elementary mathematician was Tarit Wutthisirisart of Logansport High School in Logansport, Ind.

The second place team from Marion High School in Marion, Ind. consisted of Rebecca Tweedall, Justin Chen, Alex Hornett, and Ashley DeMichael. Those students earned $500 for teacher Doug Porter’s use in math instruction. The second place individual advanced winner was Rebecca Rose of Logansport High School, and the second place individual elementary winner was Hunsberger.

Placing third and earning $250 for math instructor Jeff Powell was the team from Quincy High School in Quincy, Mich. With Powell, center, are team members Yuanfei Miao, Katie Willard, Sam Haberl, and Josh Ditton.

The third place individual advanced winner was Brent O’Brien of East Noble High School in Kendallville, Ind., while Elyse Brogdon of Clinton, Mich. was the third place individual elementary winner.

Thirty-five teams representing 15 regional schools participated, attracting 154 high school mathematicians, of which 76 were advanced level and 78 were elementary level competitors.
