tsu transfers book collection to allen county library

Tri-State University has transferred its Native American book collection to the Allen County Public Library in Fort Wayne.

The material will complement the library’s existing collection of Native American genealogical materials and first-hand accounts of early travel and exploration throughout North America, said Steven Fortriede, associate library director.

“We have the world’s largest library genealogical collection, and one of our areas of specialty is Native Americans,” Fortriede said. “(The TSU collection) filled in a lot of gaps for us. It will make our Native Americans material collection much better and provide a place for researchers to get a greater variety and depth for personal and genealogical studies than before.”

A staff conservationist will preserve the collection, and the most valuable materials will be placed in a climate-controlled vault with a waterless fire suppression system, he said. As the originals are preserved, patrons will have access to digital and photo copies.

“We are pleased to transfer this collection into the largest and most noted library accumulation of genealogical material in the world,” said TSU President Dr. Earl Brooks II. “That a library collection of such magnitude and reputation values these books speaks to their importance as a tool of enlightenment about our past.”
