Former TSC first lady’s bequest is
largest individual gift
Tri-State University has received its largest gift in school
history. Former Tri-State College first lady Maxine Bateman Kolb,
widow of former TSC President Richard M. Bateman, died unexpectedly
in April leaving her estate—worth more than $3 million—to
the institution she left 30 years ago. She and her husband served
as president and first lady from 1960 to 1974.
“Many individuals remember and appreciate the service
she and her first husband gave to Tri-State, and we are indebted
to them for their loyalty and thoughtfulness,” said Dr.
Earl D. Brooks II, president of Tri-State University. “This
seven-figure bequest helps us to build the University Center,
located on the west end of campus, where President Bateman expanded
Tri-State, and it continues TSU’s recent fund raising successes.”
After the death of Dr. Bateman, Mrs. Bateman married Joseph
Kolb. Mrs. Kolb continued to support the school financially as
did her second husband, Joseph.
The gift was received at an ideal time for TSU. Prior to receiving
the gift, the Lilly Endowment began its second phase of a fundraising
initiative. During the fundraising initiative, Lilly Endowment
will match $1.50 for every $1 TSU receives from its supporters,
up to $3 million. No more than $750,000 may come from a single
donor. Through the initiative, Mrs. Bateman Kolb gift will be
matched with an additional $1.125 million.
