TSU presents Why You Should Read X series

The Humanities Institute and Department of English and Communications at Tri-State University will present the “Why You Should Read X” series this fall, which is open to student, faculty, and the general public. The first presentation will take place at 12 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 6 in Wells Theatre in Taylor Hall. The series will continue at noon on Friday, Nov. 10 and at 11 a.m. on Friday, Dec.1.

“We want to call attention to literature and non-fiction that is both enjoyable and educational,” said Dr. Thomas Tierney, director of The Humanities Institute of Tri-State University.

According to Tierney, the format for the series is non-formal and entertaining. Each speaker bases their presentation on why the audience should read a certain piece of literature.

Dr. Robert Whelchel, award winning Professor of Electrical Engineering at Tri-State University, kicks off the series and Steuben READ Express, the community reading project, by examining Tracy Kidder’s biography of Dr. Paul Farmer, Mountains Beyond Mountains.

The second presentation in the series, Why You Should Read Wodehouse, will take place on Friday, Nov. 11. Kim Shoup, Angola’s City Attorney, leads the audience into the wonderful and witty world of Jeeves.

Dr. Tim Tyler, Professor of Civil Engineering at TSU, will present the third presentation, Why You Should Read A Christmas Carol, at 11 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 1. Tyler will tell his listeners why he re-reads the Dicken’s tale every Christmas season.

This is TSU’s second semester of presenting the literature series. Plans are already in place to continue the series next semester.
