TSU Dean takes a new role
in study abroad program

D. TichenorDr. Dolores Tichenor, currently Dean of the Jannen School of Arts and Sciences, will serve as Assistant Vice President for Study Abroad, Director of Institutional Planning and Analysis, and Professor in the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science effective December 11.

“Dolores’ contributions to TSU have been abundant over the years, and I believe that her passion for travel abroad and administrative skill make her the ideal candidate to create a vibrant study abroad program at TSU,” said Dr. David Finley, Vice President for Academic Affairs.

Tichenor’s duties as the Assistant Vice President for Study Abroad will include overseeing TSU’s current program and developing additional overseas study opportunities for TSU students.  She has served as Director of Institutional Planning and Analysis for more than ten years. Those responsibilities include assisting faculty in preparing grant proposals and coordinating the University’s data reporting to various external agencies.

Tichenor has a doctorate in statistics from the University of Missouri-Rolla, a master’s degree in mathematics from Purdue University, and a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Mundelein College. Over the past ten years, Tichenor has written and developed grant proposals that provided Tri-State University more than $4 million in grants from various foundations and corporations. She has also received various teaching awards, including the Helen Smith McKetta Excellence in Teaching Award in 1990, the Barrenbrugge Award for Excellence in Teaching in 1993, Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers in 1994, 1999, and 2004, and the Jannen Renaissance Scholar Award in 2004.

Over the years, she has taught sixteen different mathematics courses and three computer science courses at Tri-State University. Tichenor has served as a Reader for the Free Response portion of the Advanced Placement Calculus exam for nine years. During the summer of 1996, Tichenor taught statistics at Mara Community College in Kuantan, Malaysia. Her love of travel and her belief that Tri-State University students should have more opportunities to travel overseas led her to develop three additional courses—Vienna: Castles, Cathedrals, and Culture (spring 2005); Normandy and Paris: D-Day, Art, and Architecture (spring 2006); Berlin, WWII, and the Cold War (planned for spring 2007). These courses include a trip overseas during TSU’s spring break.

Tichenor is a long-time member of the Board of Directors of the Steuben County Literacy Coalition and currently serves as treasurer. She is a member of the Cameron Memorial Hospital Foundation Board of Directors. She serves on the Humanities Committee of the Steuben County Community Foundation and as the Steuben County (one of nine counties) representative to the Regional Arts Advisory Council. She is a member of the Mathematical Association of America and has served in many capacities, including chair of the Indiana Section. She was recently honored by the Women’s Fund of the Steuben County Community Foundation in A Tribute to Women of Angola, Ind. as part of the city’s 100-year anniversary.
