Several women with Tri-State University ties, including Dr. Dolores Tichenor, Dean of the Jannen School of Arts and Sciences, were recently recognized in A Tribute to Women of Angola, Ind. The recognition was in celebration of Angola’s 100th anniversary of its foundation and was sponsored by the Women’s Fund of Steuben County Community Foundation. In all, 39 women were recognized for having shown achievement in their career and having made a noted contribution to the Angola community. Ten of those women were affiliated with TSU.
The following women were recognized (Tri-State University was referred to as Tri-State College and Tri-State Normal School until its name change in 1975.):
Anne Bowden
A movie buff, Bowden set up movie nights at Tri-State University. The program, now dubbed Cinema Sampler, is still active today.
Frances Elliot Clark
A Tri-State College alum, Clark went on to become the supervisor of music in Milwaukee school and president of the music section of the National Education Association. In 1928, she organized a music club in Steuben County, which is still active.
Roxie Allman Charles

Her home is now known as the University Trine Guest Cottage.
Alice A. Parrott
Parrott was an alum of Tri-State College and served as a professor of English and chair of the Latin Department from 1917 to 1924. She then went on to develop the English Department. Dr. Dolores Tichenor
Tichenor is currently the dean of the Jannen School of Arts and Sciences, the director of institutional planning and analysis, and a professor of mathematics at TSU. She has written and developed grant proposals that provided TSU more than $3.5 million from various foundations and corporations. She has also received various teaching awards, including the Helen Smith McKetta Excellence in Teaching Award in 1990, the Barrenbrugge Award for Excellence in Teaching in 1993, Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers in 1994, 1999, and 2004, and the Jannen Renaissance Scholar Award in 2004.
Her love of travel and her belief that Tri-State University students should have more opportunities to travel overseas led her to develop three additional HNR 401 courses—Vienna: Castles, Cathedrals, and Culture (spring 2005); Normandy and Paris: D-Day, Art, and Architecture (spring 2006); Berlin, WW II, and the Cold War (planned for spring 2007). These courses include a trip over TSU’s spring break.
Tichenor is a long-time member of the Board of Directors of the Steuben County Literacy Coalition and currently serves as treasurer. She is a member of the Cameron Memorial Hospital Foundation Board of Directors. She serves on the Humanities Committee of the Steuben County Community Foundation and as the Steuben County (one of nine counties) representative to the Regional Arts Advisory Council. She is a member of the Mathematical Association of America and has served in many capacities, including chair of the Indiana Section.
