05.05 / TSU Baseball Concludes Season with a Loss to Calvin

The Tri-State University baseball team ended the 2008 season with a 5-1 loss to Calvin College. The Knights scored three runs in the third inning and two runs in the fourth to secure the victory. The Thunder struggled from the plate and only managed three hits in the game.

Adam Bowden (Angola, Ind./Angola), Todd Shadley (Kalamazoo, Mich./Parchment), and Russell Braun (Corydon, Ind./Corydon Central) had one hit apiece for TSU. Jeremy Howard (Elkhart, Ind./Concord) drove in Shadley with a sacrifice fly to give TSU their only run of the game.

Jordan Maxson (Bremen, Ind./Bremen) got the start on the mound for TSU and suffered the loss after allowing three runs off four hits in three innings.

The Thunder finished the 2008 campaign with an overall record of 18-22 overall and 12-16 in conference action. The Knights currently stand at 28-7 overall and 19-5 in the MIAA and is tied with Adrian for the top spot in the conference. Calvin will continue their season with a series against Kalamazoo on Wednesday and Thursday.

05.04 / TSU Defense Secures Sweep of Kalamazoo

The Tri-State University baseball team limited Kalamazoo College to six hits in game one and two hits in game two as the Thunder went on to sweep the Hornets. TSU took game one by an 8-2 margin and got a complete game shutout by Adam Shiltz (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles North) on their way to a 7-0 win. TSU takes the series against Kalamazoo four games to none.

Brad Laucher (Marion, Ohio/Ridgedale) led the TSU offense with two home runs in a 3-3 performance at the plate in game one. Laucher drove in four of the Thunder’s eight runs. Jeremy Howard (Elkhart, Ind./Concord) doubled for TSU and had two RBI’s. Adam Bowden (Angola, Ind./Angola) and Chris Osborne (Greenwood, Ind./Center Grove) contributed with two hits apiece.

 

Elliot Gaff (Churubusco, Ind./Churubusco) recorded the complete game win and allowed two runs off six hits and struck out six.

Shiltz gave TSU plenty of breathing room in the nightcap with a solid performance on the mound. Shiltz got the shutout off two hits and one walk while striking out three. Kalamazoo stranded four runners on base in the shutout.

Howard, Russell Braun (Corydon, Ind./Corydon Central), and Justin Kurtz (Edgerton, Ohio/Edgerton) combined for six hits in game two. Braun drove in three runs and scored one. Todd Shadley (Kalamazoo, Mich./Parchment) drove in two runs with one single on the day.

TSU improves their season record to 18-21 on the season and 12-15 in conference play. Kalamazoo drops to 12-16 overall and 8-16 in the MIAA. The Thunder will conclude their season on Monday when they travel to Calvin College for a single make-up game.

05.02 / Braun Leads Baseball Over Kalamazoo On Senior Day

Despite a battle with Mother Nature, Tri-State University baseball grabbed two victories on Saturday against the visiting Hornets of Kalamazoo. In game one, the Thunder shut out Kalamazoo 2-0 in 6.5 innings while in game 2, Tri-State had a come-from-behind win 3-2 in nine innings of play.

Game one started out withlight rainas Tri-State grabbed the first out of the game on the first at-bat for Kalamazoo, when the game was delayed due to rain. About an hour later, play resumed as the Thunder and the Hornets battled for 3.5 quiet innings of play before the Thunder got on the board first by freshman Joe Scott (Plymouth, Ind./Plymouth) to take the lead 1-0. Unable to get home, the Hornets of Kalamazoo allowed one more run on the day in the bottom of the fifth by senior Russell Braun (Corydon, Ind./Corydon Central) to take a 2-0 lead going into the sixth. The Hornets had two more chances at the plate but it proved to be all Thunder as the defense held on solid for the win.

Senior Jordan Maxson (Bremen, Ind./Bremen) pitched five innings for the Thunder, with two hits and allowing no runs to be scored, as sophomore teammate Adam Shiltz (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles North) continued strong on the mound, pitching the last two innings of the game, allowing no hits and no runs. The Hornets' Ben Schroeder and Kyle Kilpatrick combined for six innings pitched, allowing two runs on nine hits. The Thunder improve to 9-15 in the MIAA and 15-21 overall, while the Hornets drop to 8-13 in MIAA play, 12-13 overall.

The senior engineers Matt Laucher (Marion, Ohio/Ridgedale); Jordan Maxson; Ben Thomas (St. Paul, Ind./Waldron), teammate criminal justice major Russell Braun, and sport management major Dennis Skibbe were honored between thegames for their hard work and commitmentfor the past four years at Tri-State University under head coach Greg Perschke.

Game two on the afternoon saw Kalamazoo taking an early 1-0 lead at the top of the second for a few innings as Tri-State was unable to score until the bottom of the sixth to tie it up at one apiece by a run from Adam Bowden (Angola, Ind./Angola). The seventh inning was quiet, as the Thunder and the Hornets sent the game into extra innings, while neither team could score in eighth. As the sun came out in the top of the ninth inning, the Thunder allowed one run to be scored, as the Hornets took a 2-1 lead. In the bottom of the ninth, senior Russell Braun didn't let the Hornets ruin his Senior Day, as he hit his team-leading third homerun of the year to tie things up at 2-2 with no outs. Backing him up were Joe Scottand Chris Osborne (Greenwood, Ind./Center Grove)tohit insophomore Justin Kurtz (Edgerton, Ohio/Edgerton) for the Thunder victory at 3-2 with one out and two left on base.

Senior Ben Thomas (St. Paul, Ind./Waldron) pitched four innings for the Thunder, allowing one run on three hits, while teammate Dennis Skibbe (New Paris, Ind./Fairfield)pitched 0.2 innings, allowing one hit. Wrapping things up on the mound was Lauren Parr (Kendallville, Ind./Prairie Heights) who pitched 4.1 innings allowing one run on three hits. Kalamazoo's David Oliphant pitched 8.1 innings for the Hornets, allowing three runs on eight hits.

Tri-State improves to 10-15 in the MIAA, 16-21 on the year, while the Hornets are 12-14 and 8-14 in the MIAA. Tri-State's Russell Braun leads all Thunder players with 24 runs on the season, grabbing his 23rd in game one and 24th in game two. Baseball finishes up MIAA play this weekend as they travel to Kalamazoo, Michigan to take on the Hornets in a double-header on Sunday, first pitch set for 1 p.m. as well as heading back up to Calvin for a make-up game on the 5th.

04.26 / TSU Offense Explodes as TSU Takes Series from Alma

The Tri-State University offense scored 13 runs in a game one victory and 16 runs in a game two victory to take the series from Alma College. TSU took a game one come-from-behind win 13-7 and took game two 16-6.

Alma led 7-6 as TSU headed into the top of the seventh. The Thunder used seven hits to put together seven runs in the seventh to take a 13-7 lead. Todd Shadley (Kalamazoo, Mich./Parchment) got the inning started with a three run home run. Brad Laucher (Marion, Ohio/Ridgedale) followed that with a solo home run. The Thunder took advantage of an Alma error to score two unearned runs to end the inning.

Shadley, Laucher, and Adam Bowden (Angola, Ind./Angola) each had two hits apiece in game one. Shadley had five RBI’s. Russell Braun (Corydon, Ind./Corydon Central) scored three runs. Adam Shiltz (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles North) earned the win in relief.

The Thunder used 16 hits to produce 16 runs in the game two victory. TSU jumped ahead early with seven runs in the first and added two more in the second. With a 10-6 lead, Tri-State added six more runs in the seventh to secure the sweep.

Braun went 3-5 from the plate with four RBI’s and one run scored. Jeremy Howard (Elkhart, Ind./Concord) contributed with two hits, three runs scored, and four RBI’s. Laucher went 2-3 at the plate with four runs scored.

Elliot Gaff (Churubusco, Ind./Churubusco) picked up his first win of the season. Gaff pitched 6.1 innings and allowed six runs off 12 hits and struck out four.

TSU improves to 14-21 overall and 8-15 in MIAA play. Alma falls to 9-19 on the season and 6-11 in conference action.

04.25 / TSU Offense Struggles in Loss to Wabash

The Tri-State University baseball team lost a non-conference game 9-3 against visiting Wabash College. The Little Giants offense was in full swing as they put together 15 hits. The TSU offense struggled to find consistency as they only accumulated four hits in the game.

Tom Girodat (Armada, Mich./Armada) had one hit and drove in two runs for TSU. Justin Kurtz (Edgerton, Ohio/Edgerton) produced a hit and scored a run.

The Thunder drops their season record to 12-21. Wabash improves to 18-19 on the season. The Thunder will return to MIAA action tomorrow as they travel to Alma College to take on the Scots.

04.24/ TSU Baseball Splits with Alma

The Tri-State University baseball team split a doubleheader with the Alma College Scots 1-9, 4-0. The Scots pulled away from the Thunder in game one with a seven run fifth inning. TSU bounced back in game two behind a superb pitching effort by Adam Shiltz (St. Charles, Ill/St. Charles North). Shiltz went the distance and allowed just three hits.

Brad Laucher (Marion, Ohio/Ridgedale) led the Thunder offense with a 5-6 performance from the plate. Todd Shadley (Kalamazoo, Mich./Parchment) contributed with three hits. Russell Braun (Corydon, Ind./Corydon Central) had two hits and two RBI on the day.

The TSU record moves to 12-20 overall and 6-15 in the MIAA. Alma is now 9-17 overall and 6-9 in the conference. The Thunder will continue their series at Alma on Saturday. TSU will host Wabash College tomorrow. The game is set to start at 4 p.m.

04.19 / TSU Baseball Drops Two to Hope College

The Tri-State University baseball team lost both games of a doubleheader to Hope College at Jannen Field. Hope jumped on 15 hits in game one to take a 14-3 victory. The TSU offense could not get going in game two as they were limited to two hits in a 4-0 loss.

Brad Laucher (Marion, Ohio/Ridgedale) and Joe Minnich (New Haven, Ind./New Haven) each went 2-3 from the plate in game one. Todd Shadley (Kalamazoo, Mich./Parchment) had one hit, one walk, drove in one run, and scored one run.

Jordan Maxson (Bremen, Ind./Bremen) suffered the loss after giving up eight runs, six earned, off eight hits in five innings of work.

Laucher and Justin Kurtz (Edgerton, Ohio/Edgerton) put together the Thunder’s only two hits of game two. Tom Giradot (Armada, Mich./Armada) reached base on a walk and Russell Braun (Corydon, Ind./Corydon Central) reached base after being hit by a pitch to give TSU four runners stranded on base.

Elliot Gaff (Churubusco, Ind./Churubusco) pitched 5.0 innings and allowed three runs, two earned, off four hits and struck out two. Adam Shiltz (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles North) pitched 2.0 inning of relief and gave up one run off two hits.

04.16 / TSU Baseball Splits Doubleheader with Hope

The Tri-State University baseball team split a league doubleheader with Hope College. TSU took game one by a score of 10-4. The Flying Dutchmen took the nightcap 5-4.

Russell Braun (Corydon, Ind./Corydon Central) hit a three run homerun in TSU’s five run third inning that put TSU ahead 6-4. Braun had three hits in the game. Adam Bowden (Angola, Ind./Angola) added three hits and scored three runs in the game. Jeremy Howard (Elkhart, Ind./Concord) went 2-3 at the plate with two runs scored and one RBI.

Dennis Skibbe (New Paris, Ind./Fairfield) picked up the win on the mound with four innings of work and allowed four runs off six hits and struck out four. Lauren Parr (Kendallville, Ind./Prairie Heights) earned the save after allowing only one hit in 3.0 innings.

TSU only managed six hits in game two as Hope earned a come from behind victory. TSU held a 4-3 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh. Hope scored two runs off three hits to earn the victory.

Chris Osborne (Greenwood, Ind./Center Grove) went 3-3 at the plate in game two and drove in two runs. Todd Shadley (Kalamazoo, Mich./Parchment) had one hit, one walk, and scored twice.

Jason Buck (Elkhart, Ind./Mishawaka) went 5.2 innings and allowed three runs, two earned, off seven hits and struck out two for the no decision. Zach Bour (Kokomo, Ind./Northwestern) suffered the loss after giving up two earned runs off three hits in 0.2 innings.

04.14 / TSU Wins Extra Inning Affair with #23 Ranked Calvin College

Tri-State University and Calvin College split the MIAA doubleheader held at Jannen Field. The #23 ranked Knights took the opening game 8-5. TSU won the nightcap 12-11 in nine innings for the split.

Calvin jumped out to an early lead in game one with three runs in the top of the first inning. TSU was not phased as a two-run homerun by Brad Laucher (Marion, Ohio/Ridgedale) pulled the Thunder back within one run. That one run lead was as close as TSU would get the rest of the game as the Knights extended their lead to four in the fifth inning before TSU scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth and one run in the sixth. Calvin put game one away with two runs off three hits in the top of the seventh.

Adam Bowden (Angola, Ind./Angola), Joe Scott (Plymouth, Ind./Plymouth), and Jeremy Howard (Elkhart, Ind./Concord) contributed with two hits apiece. Jordan Maxson (Bremen, Ind./Bremen) took the loss after allowing seven runs, five earned, off 10 hits.

The Knights started game two just like it did game one with a big first inning. Calvin used four hits in the first inning to jump to a 5-0 lead. TSU brought themselves back into the game and took the lead with a six run second inning.

Howard started the inning with a walk and was advanced to second by an infield single from Russell Braun (Corydon, Ind./Corydon Central). An error placed Todd Shadley (Kalamazoo, Mich./Parchment) on first and howard. Myles Conger (Mokena, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) reached base on a fielder’s choice and scored Braun on an error by the pitcher. Bowden scored the third run of the inning off a sac fly to right field by Bowden.

A Tom Giradot (Armada, Mich./Armada) single to center field drove in Chris Osborne (Greenwood, Ind./Plymouth) and Conger. TSU scored their final run of the inning as Howard got a bases loaded walk that sent Giradot across the plate.

The Thunder increased their lead to 8-5 in the third inning. Kurtz started the inning with a homerun. Giradot hit a sac fly to right field to drive in Conger who reached base on an infield single.

Calvin used three hits in the fourth inning to score three runs to pull within one run. TSU answered the call with two runs of their own in the fourth to increase their lead back to three runs. Howard started the TSU attack with a single to right field. Braun advanced him to second with a single to left field. Shadley drove in Howard with a single to center field and Kurtz scored Braun with another single to left field.

The Thunder held a 10-7 lead heading into the seventh inning. Calvin would not go away quietly as they exploded for four runs off five hits and one error in the top of the seventh to take an 11-10 lead.

Osborne started the TSU rally with a one out double to center field. Joe Minnich (New Haven, Ind./New Haven) drove in Osborne to tie the game at 11 with a single to left field.

Both teams went score in the eighth inning. TSU got out of trouble in the ninth as Calvin had the bases loaded after a single and two consecutive walks with two outs. A pop-up to the catcher got the Thunder out of the inning.

Osborne once again started the TSU rally with a single to left field. Joel Bruskotter (Fort Jennings, Ohio/Fort Jennings) reached first after being hit by a pitch and Osborne advanced to second. Laucher drove in the game-winning run with a single to right field that scored Osborne.

04.10 / Baseball Drops Game 1 to Calvin

The Tri-State University baseball team dropped game 1 of their scheduled doubleheader to Calvin College 5-2. Game 2 was postponed due to rain.

Calvin used a three run third inning to jump ahead of TSU and improve their record to 17-2 overall and 9-0 in the MIAA. TSU falls to 9-15 overall and 3-10 in conference play.

Brad Laucher (Marion, Ohio/Ridgedale) and Russell Braun (Corydon, Ind./Corydon Central) each scored runs for the Thunder. Justin Kurtz (Edgerton, Ohio.Edgerton) and Chris Osborne (Greenwood, Ind./Center Grove) contributed with one RBI apiece.

Elliot Gaff (Churubusco, Ind./Churubusco) threw a complete game and gave up four earned runs off eight hits and struck out three.

04.07 / Albion Narrowly Escapes TSU with Sweep

The Tri-State University baseball team dropped both games of an MIAA doubleheader against Albion College at Jannen Field. The Britons scored one run in the top of the seventh in game one to escape with a 2-1 victory. The Thunder rally fell short in game two as they scored two runs in the seventh but dropped the game 5-6.

TSU took advantage of an Albion error in the third inning of game one to go on the board first in the third inning. Tom Girodat (Armada, Mich./Armada) opened the third inning with a single and eventually scored when Todd Shadley (Kalamazoo, Mich./Parchment) reached on an error by the second baseman.

Albion used two hits in the fifth inning to score one run and tie the game. The Britons started the top of the seventh with a double to center field. A single to center allowed the game-winning run to cross the plate. Albion secured the 2-1 victory with three consecutive outs in the seventh inning.

Jordan Maxson (Bremen, Ind./Bremen) went the distance and allowed two runs off six hits and struck out three.

The Britons jumped on TSU early in game two with four runs in the second inning. TSU kept battling and made it a one-run game with two runs in the seventh inning before Albion secured the victory. TSU outhit the Britons 9-7 in game two but stranded nine runners on base.

Jeremy Howard (Elkhart, Ind./Concord) went 2-2 at the plate in game two with two walks, two runs scored, and one RBI. Russell Braun (Corydon, Ind./Corydon Central) and Justin Kurtz (Edgerton, Ohio/Edgerton) contributed with two hits apiece.

TSU drops their season record to 9-14 overall and 3-9 in the MIAA. Albion improves to 6-16 overall and 5-7 in league action.

04.05 / TSU Baseball Drops Two Games at Adrian College

The Tri-State University baseball team faced conference opponent Adrian College on Saturday, April 5th 2008 at Adrian College. Adrian swept the doubleheader with a 7-0 game one win and a come-from-behind 5-2 win in game two.

Chris Osborne (Greenwood, Ind./Center Grove) Nick Creager (Woodburn, Ind./Woodlan) and Joe Scott (Plymouth, Ind./Plymouth) combined for the only three hits for the Thunder in the first game.  The Thunder had a hard time on offense and defense against the Bulldogs. TSU was out-hit 3-7 which the Bulldogs capitalized into seven runs.

The baseball team put up a fight in the second game but fell short. TSU had 12 hits but could only score two runs. Adam Bowden (Angola, Ind./Angola) had three hits and one RBI. Creager, Joe Minnich (New Haven, Ind./New Haven) and Osborne each had two hits. TSU could not take advantage of 12 hits as they were limited to two runs and had 10 runners stranded on base. Adrian used a four run sixth inning to pull out the come-from-behind victory.

04.02 / TSU Baseball Splits in Home Opener

The Tri-State University baseball team battled back from a 3-1 game one loss to take game two 4-2 against MIAA rival Adrian College at Jannen Field.

Adrian jumped ahead early in game one with a two-out run in the top of the first inning. TSU tied the game at one in the third inning, scoring Joe Scott (Plymouth, Ind./Plymouth) off a Brad Laucher (Marion, Ohio/Ridgedale) sacrifice fly. The Bulldogs took the lead for good in the fifth inning and added one insurance run in the seventh.

Scott led the Thunder from the plate with a 3-3 performance. Chris Osborne (Greenwood, Ind./Center Grove) contributed with two hits. Jordan Maxson (Bremen, Ind./Bremen) suffered the loss on the mound in 6.0 inning of work. Maxson allowed two runs off four hits, walked three, and struck out seven.

In game two, TSU used three hits in the third to score three runs to take a 3-0 lead they would never relinquish. Osborne went 3-3 at the plate with one run scored and one RBI. Russell Braun (Corydon, Ind./Corydon Central) and Nick Creager (Woodburn, Ind./Woodlan) contributed with one hit apiece.

Jason Buck (Elkhart, Ind./Mishawaka) pitched 4.2 innings and allowed one run off two hits and struck out four to pick up the win. Adam Shiltz (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles North) earned the save in 2.1 innings of relief and allowed one run off two hits.

TSU currently stands at 9-10 on the season a 3-5 in MIAA play. Adrian is now 11-5 and 4-2 in conference action. The TSU-Adrian series will continue on Saturday at Adrian College. The first pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.

03.30 / Thunder Baseball Goes 1-4 in Series Against Olivet

This past weekend Tri-State University baseball team went 1-4 with Olivet College. The Thunder beat Olivet in the second game 6-2, but fell short in the other three with scores of 1-2, 5-6, and 1-4. This now leaves the men with a 2-4 record in conference play. 

In the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader there were four hits. Contributing with one hit each were Russell Braun (Corydon, Ind./Corydon Central) and Chris Osborne (Greenwood, Ind./Center Grove), and Tom Giradot (Armada, Mich./Armada) with two hits.  Pitching for the Thunder was Jordan Maxson (Bremen, Ind./Bremen) who gave up only one walk and had six strikeouts. 

The team bounced back in the second game with eight hits to win 6-2. Neal Hickle (Mishawaka, Ind./Mishawaka) had a strong game hitting 3-4, scoring one run, and knocking in one RBI.  Making up the rest of the RBI’s were Brad Laucher (Marion, Ohio/Ridgedale) with two, and Adam Bowden (Angola, Ind./Angola), Nick Creager (Woodburn, Ind./Woodlan), Braun, and Joel Bruskotter (Fort Jennings, Ohio/Fort Jennings) with one apiece.

On Sunday’s double header TSU lost two close ones. In the first game, the Thunder had 10 hits compared to nine for Olivet. Braun went 2-3 scoring two runs and driving in one. Jeremy Howard (Elkhart, Ind./Concord) went 2-2 and had two RBI’s. Elliot Gaff (Churubusco, Ind./Churubusco) pitched 6.2 innings and allowed only one walk and struck out eight batters.  The Thunder lost 5-6.

Falling short again in the second game TSU lost 1-4. Creager had a hit and scored TSU’s only run. Bruskotter had the only RBI. Adam Shiltz (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles North) went the distance, giving up seven hits, four runs, two walks, and striking out three batters. 

03.26 / Late Runs Lead to TSU Victory over Goshen

The Tri-State University baseball team defeated the Goshen College Maple Leafs 7-6. With the wind strongly blowing toward centerfield, both offenses took advantage early. Justin Kurtz (Edgerton, Ohio/Edgerton) hit a three-run homerun to give the Thunder a 5-4 lead after three innings. After a quick start, both teams clamped down with pitching and defense. Goshen scored a run in the fifth and eighth to take a one run lead into the ninth. In the final inning, the Thunder loaded the bases and with two outs Chad Nichter (New Haven, Ind./New Haven) hit a two RBI double down the leftfield line to win the game.

Adam Shiltz (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles North) picked up the win on the mound. Shiltz pitched the final 1.2 innings and allowed no hits.

Adam Bowden (Angola, Ind./Angola) sparked the TSU offense with a 3-5 performance. Kurtz finished the day with two hits and three RBI. Brad Laucher (Marion, Ohio/Ridgedale) and Neal Hickle (Mishawaka, Ind./Mishawaka) both had two hits for the Thunder offense.

TSU improves their record to 6-7 overall. Goshen College drops to a 5-14 record. TSU is scheduled to be back in action on Thursday for their home opener. The Thunder will host the Olivet College Comets for a 2 p.m. start.

03.20 / TSU Baseball Opens MIAA Play at Albion with Split

The Tri-State University baseball team opened conference play with a split at Albion College. The Britons took game one 3-6 and the Thunder won game two 6-3 in ten innings.

The Thunder offense started the day with two runs in the first inning. Brad Laucher (Marion, Ohio/Ridgedale) doubled to drive in Joe Scott (Plymouth, Ind./Plymouth). Jeremy Howard (Elkhart, Ind./Concord) followed up with a double to score Laucher. Albion responded in the bottom half of the first inning with a grand slam to take a 4-2 lead after one. Albion maintained a lead throughout the game as TSU missed on a couple offensive opportunities.

The second game was a pitching dual as Adam Shiltz (St. Charles, Ill./St. Chalres North) took the mound for the Thunder. The game remained scoreless until the fifth inning when Laucher hit a single to drive in Joel Bruskotter (Fort Jennings, Ohio/Fort Jennings). The Thunder tacked on two more insurance runs in the seventh. The Albion bats came alive in the seventh to tie the game 3-3. In extra innings Zach Bour (Kokomo, Ind./Kokomo) pitched two scoreless innings for the Thunder. TSU finally broke the game open in the tenth inning behind a Tom Giradot (Armada, Mich./Armada) RBI single and a Bruskotter two RBI double. Jordan Maxson (Bremen, Ind./Bremen) closed the game out on the mound to pick up the save.

Shiltz pitched 6.1 innings while allowing just six hits and one run. Bour picked up the win for the Thunder.

Brad Laucher anchored the TSU offensive day with a 5-8 performance that included two RBI and two doubles.

TSU moves to an overall record of 5-7 and a 1-1 MIAA record. Albion falls to 2-10 overall and 1-1 in the conference. TSU will return to action for their home opener on Saturday against Albion. The game is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start.    

03.16 / Thunder Baseball Splits with MC

The Tri-State University baseball team split a doubleheader with the Manchester College Spartans. The Thunder fell 1-3 in game one and bounced back for a 3-0 victory in game two.

In game one, both teams struggled early to get it going offensively. MC went hitless until the fourth inning as they went on to tally one run in the fourth and two more runs in the fifth. TSU missed on a couple opportunities to put runs on the board. The Thunder scored their lone run in the seventh inning as a late rally fell short.

Chris Osborne (Greenwood, Ind./Center Grove), Russell Braun (Corydon, Ind./Corydon Central), Joel Bruskotter (Fort Jennings, Ohio/Fort Jennings), and Tom Giradot (Armada, Mich./Armada) all had hits in the effort.

TSU continued solid play behind the pitching of Chad Nicther (New Haven, Ind./New Haven) in game two. The Thunder offense scored early with a run in the first and third inning. Jeremy Howard (Elkhart, Ind./Concord) knocked in Osborne on a sacrifice fly for the first run of the game. Braun tripled in the third inning and scored Howard from first base. The Thunder tacked on an insurance run in the top of the seventh inning to fend off the Spartans.

Brad Laucher (Marion, Ohio/Ridgedale) and Braun led the Thunder offense with two hits each.

Nichter pitched a complete game that included six hits, three strikeouts, and no walks. Nichter improves his record on the mound to 3-0.

The Thunder record is now 4-6. The MC record moves to 4-5. TSU is scheduled to open their conference season at Albion on Wednesday. Game time is set for 2 p.m.

03.07 / TSU Finishes Spring Trip with Sweep of Gettysburg

The Tri-State University baseball team took two games from the Gettysburg College Bullets. In game one, both offenses came out strong and the Thunder managed to take a 5-3 lead after one inning. From that point on the TSU bats kept it going as they finished with 20 total hits to defeat Gettysburg 12-5.

Joe Scott (Plymouth, Ind./Plymouth) led the Thunder offense with four hits including an RBI double. Joel Bruskotter (Fort Jennings, Ohio/Fort Jennings) knocked in four runs on two hits including a three-run home run. Brad Laucher (Marion, Ohio/Ridgedale) tallied three RBI with three hits including a double. Chris Osborne (Greenwood, Ind./Center Grove), Nick Creager (Woodburn, Ind./Woodlan), Russell Braun (Corydon, Ind./Corydon Central), Cameron Heckley (New Haven, Ind./New Haven), and Joe Minnich (New Haven, Ind./New Haven) all contributed two hits to the Thunder effort.

Jordan Maxson (Bremen, Ind./Bremen) picked up the win on the mound for the Thunder. Adam Shiltz (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles North) earned a save allowing one hit over 3 2/3 innings pitched.

TSU took an early lead in game two with three runs in the second inning off of doubles by Heckley and Minnich. The Bullets responded in the bottom half of the inning with two runs. The game remained close throughout. In the seventh inning Ben Thomas (St. Paul, Ind./Waldron) came in for relief of Chad Nichter (New Haven, Ind./New Haven). With a one run lead, Thomas retired three straight batters for the save as the Thunder claimed a 6-5 victory.

Nichter pitched six solid innings allowing five runs on nine hits to pick up his second win of the season.

The TSU baseball team closes out their spring trip with a 3-5 record. TSU is scheduled to take on Grace College at Manchester College on Saturday March 15th.

03.06 / TSU Baseball Swept by Beloit in Tampa

Beloit College pounded out 13 hits and limited the Thunder to two hits in game one to take a 5-1 victory. Nick Creager (Woodburn, Ind./Woodlan) and Russell Braun (Corydon, Ind./Corydon Central) had the Thunder’s only hits of the game.

Brad Laucher (Marion, Ohio/Ridgedale) scored the Thunder’s only run of the game after reaching base on a walk and was drove in by Braun’s single. Dennis Skibbe (New Paris, Ind./Fairfield) pitched four innings and gave up four earned runs to take the loss.

TSU put together three hits in game two but allowed three unearned runs off five errors in dropping game two 5-1.  Creager, Joe Scott (Plymouth, Ind./Plymouth), and Justin Kurtz (Edgerton, Ohio/Edgerton) each had one hit apiece.

Elliot Gaff (Churubusco, Ind./Churubusco) allowed five runs, two earned, off seven hits in 5.0 innings of work. Lauren Parr (Kendallville, Ind./Prairie Heights) came in in relief and struck out two in one inning.

03.04 / Errors Prove Costly in TSU Losses to Maryville

The Tri-State University baseball team dropped both games of their doubleheader against Maryville University. Maryville took game one by a score of 8-5. TSU committed four errors and gave up four unearned runs. In a close game two, TSU committed three errors and fell 2-1, with both runs being unearned.

In game one, TSU jumped out to an early 4-2 lead after the first inning. Maryville responded with one run in the second and two runs in third to retake the lead. TSU tied the game at five with one run in the fourth before Maryville closed out the game with one run in each of the final three innings.

Joel Bruskotter (Fort Jennings, Ohio/Fort Jennings) had a home run and drove in three runs to lead the Thunder. Jason Buck (Elkhart, Ind./Mishawaka) took the loss with six runs, three earned, in five innings.

In game two, hits were hard to come by for the Thunder as they managed only three in the game. Russell Braun (Corydon, Ind./Corydon Central) and Joe Scott (Plymouth, Ind./Plymouth) combined for the three Thunder hits. Adam Shiltz (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles North) went the distance for TSU and allowed two unearned runs off seven hits and struck out five.

03.03 / TSU Baseball Takes One of Two Games To Open Season

The Tri-State University baseball team started the 2008 season with a split against Widener in their opening games at Tampa, Fla. Widener took the first game by a score of 11-8 behind five runs in the second inning. TSU came from behind in game two with five runs in the fourth inning to take a 5-3 victory.

In both games, Joel Bruskotter (Fort Jennings, Ohio/Fort Jennings) combined to lead the Thunder with a 3-6 performance at the plate, drove in three runs, and scored three times. Tom Girodat (Armada, Mich./Armada) and Brad Laucher (Marion, Ohio/Ridgedale) both batted .500 at the plate with two hits apiece. Laucher also had three RBI’s and three walks.

Jordan Maxson (Bremen, Ind./Bremen) suffered the loss on the mound for TSU in game one. Maxson allowed eight runs, four earned, off nine hits in 2.1 innings. Chad Nichter (Fort Wayne, Ind./New Haven) went the distance in game two to earn his first win of the season. Nichter gave up three earned runs off six hits and struck out six in 7.0 innings of work.
