04.26 / Childs Leads Thunder Lacrosse to a 2-0 Weekend in New York
Tri-State men’s lacrosse come home from New York with two victories as Cory Childs (Savage, Minn./Prior Lake) led all Thunder players with five goals and six assists for 11 points on the weekend.
Game one matched the Thunder with then 2-6 Cazenovia College. TSU got a late start as Cazenovia went up 3-0 in the first quarter. The Thunder offense scored two goals while allowing one in the second quarter, on goals by Dan LaFond (Neenah, Wisc./Neenah) and Dan Giorgis (Avon, Ohio/Avon) both assisted by Childs. TSU would go into the break down 4-2.
After halftime, the Thunder really exploded with season and program highs of seven goals in the third quarter, while allowing Cazenovia only two goals. Logan Nickel (Durango, Colo./Durango) started the streak at 14:25 with a man-up goal assisted by Dylan Weber (Lake Zurich, Ill./Lake Zurich), while Childs assisted on the next two goals by JJ Griesinger (Apple Valley, Minn./Holy Angels) and Nickel at 10:51 and 8:21, respectively. Giorgis and LaFond added a goal a piece, while Kyle Mates (Noblesville, Ind./Cathedral) assisted on LaFond’s goal, at 7:18 and 6:34 left in the quarter. Mates scored one of his own at 5:53, unassisted, before Cazenovia added two of their own with 2 minutes left in the quarter. With just 16 seconds remaining on the quarter, the Thunder added another one, this time Childs was assisted by Hunter King (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Central). With the huge third quarter, the Thunder led 9-6 going into the 4th quarter.
The Thunder continued the hot streak, grabbing four goals from Cazenovia, while slowing them down to two goals. Childs scored two goals at 12:08 and 10:05, assisted from Griesinger and Mates, before Cazenovia got one with 6:51 to go. Mates scored his 2nd of the day, assisted by Weber at 3:29, and Cazenovia responded with one of their own, before Weber got his only goal of the day with 29 seconds left to end the game 13-8.
The Thunder lead in shots 40-31, and capitalized on extra man opportunities going 2-6, while Cazenovia went 0-3. Alex Gregg (Zionsville, Ind./Zionsville) made 10 saves between the pipes for the Thunder as they improve to 3-10 on the season, dropping Cazenovia to 2-7 on the year.
In game two of the weekend, TSU played the Mavs of Medaille College. A game of back and forth goals, the Thunder got on top in a thrilling over-time victory. The Thunder got on the board, evening up the score at 10:11 in the first quarter with a goal by Childs, and took the lead with seven minutes to go by Weber, assisted by Griesinger. Medaille responded back with three goals of their own, two in the first quarter and one in the second until TSU netted two from LaFond and Griesinger, both assisted by Cory Childs at 10:41 and 10:12 to go in the half. Weber was assisted by King at 8:42, putting the Thunder up 5-4 before the Mavs tied it up at five a piece. Mates scored a late goal with 2:10 to go in the half, with the Thunder taking a 6-5 lead into the break.
The third quarter was a quiet one, despite the Thunder taking nine shots on goal, they could not find the back of the net, allowing Medaille to grab one to tie it up at six for the 5th time on the day. After a quick two minute intermission between quarters, the Thunder and Mavs went back and forth, with goals by Griesinger, assisted by Giorgis at 10:24 and an unassisted goal by Childs at 4:37. Medaille would take advantage of a man-up opportunity, tying the game up at eight with 1:25 left to go in the game.
A thrilling overtime had big saves by goaltender Gregg, until Giorgis found the back of the net with just 26 seconds left to go in the first overtime, leading to a 9-8 Thunder victory. Gregg made 18 saves on the day, while the Thunder led in shots 47-20, improving to 4-10 on the year and dropping Medaille to 4-7. The Thunder finish their season next week with a make-up game at Wittenberg University on Wednesday, game time set for 7 p.m.
04.22 / Thunder Offense Unable to Strike as Wooster Dominates for the Win
The Thunder offense was shut down this afternoon as the visiting Fighting Scots of the College of Wooster dominated Tri-State in 14-6. The College of Wooster and the Thunder battled pretty evenly in the first quarter, as the Scots got on the board first before Dylan Weber (Lake Zurich, Ill./Lake Zurich) struck for the Thunder at 7:20 to go in the first quarter. The game remained tied for just a few minutes as the Scots regained the lead to go into the 2nd quarter 2-1.
The second quarter proved to be all Scots as they rolled off six goals to take the lead for good, as the Thunder’s lone goal came from Cory Childs (Savage, Minn./Prior Lake) to go into the break down 8-2. Thunder’s Alex Gregg (Zionsville, Ind./Zionsville) had 12 saves in the first half on 20 shots on goal.
After the break, the Thunder came out firing, but it wasn’t enough as the Fighting Scots got off three goals to the Thunder’s two goals of the third quarter. Childs scored from Kyle Mates (Noblesville, Ind./Cathedral) at 13:06 left in the quarter. Mates then scored his first of two goals of the game with 45 seconds remaining in the quarter, with Dan Giorgis (Avon, Ohio/Avon) assisting.
The final quarter of the game was played much like the third quarter, with the Scots getting three goals off while allowing the Thunder to only score two. Sean Hitz (Chicago, Ill./St. Rita) got off a goal at 9:17 left in the game from Ian Neerken and Mates scored his second tally of the game, again getting the assist from Giorgis.
The Thunder fall to 2-10 on the season and the College of Wooster moves to 10-2. Leading the Scots scoring was Mark Weschler with 4 goals and 2 assists. The Thunder wraps up the season with a trip east to play Medaille College and Cazenovia College, both of New York.
04.20 / Gregg’s Goaltending Shuts Down Sewanee University in Men’s Lacrosse Match-Up
The combination of goaltending by Alex Gregg (Zionsville, Ind./Zionsville) and a strong performance by the Thunder offense put the Thunder on top of the Tigers of Sewanee 18-9 on Sunday afternoon. Despite Sewanee grabbing the early lead into the contest, the Tigers could not hold on as the Thunder battled back with three goals of their own with two from Kyle Mates (Noblesville, Ind./Cathedral) and one goal by Dylan Weber (Lake Zurich, Ill./Lake Zurich). After exchanging a few goals late in the first quarter, Thunder were on top 5-4 going into the second quarter. That is the closest the Tigers would get, as the Thunder proved to take and hold on to the lead for good.
Although the second quarter had the strongest shots for the whole game, with the Thunder on top of a 14-11 shot advantage, Gregg allowed no goals while the Thunder were able to get two tallies on the board by JJ Griesinger (Apple Valley, Minn./Holy Angels) connecting both times from Mates at 8:35 and 7:37 respectively. The Thunder had a 7-4 lead going into halftime.
Sewanee came back from the break ready to battle, tying the Thunder 4-4 on goals for the third quarter. The Tigers got off two goals quick, while Mates and Griesinger added three for the Thunder. Sewanee battled back with two of their own before Griesinger connected with Cory Childs (Savage, Minn./Prior Lake) with about a minute left in the third quarter before the start of the fourth.
It was all Thunder in the fourth quarter as Tri-State took advantage of a late penalty on the Tigers to get a man-up goal by Mates who connected with Childs, leading the Thunder to three additional goals by Weber, Dan Giorgis (Avon, Ohio/Avon), and Childs. Sewanee wasn’t giving up as they fired 13 shots on goal in the fourth quarter, as Alex Gregg made nine saves before Sewanee grabbed one more from him with less then a minute to play in regulation.
Mates and Griesinger had five goals on the day, while Mates added two assists and Griesinger had one. Childs had two goals of his own as well as assisting on six others. Gregg had a big day in net for the Thunder, making 23 saves while allowing just nine goals. Tri-State is now 2-9 on the season as the Tigers of Sewanee fall 3-8. The men’s lacrosse team wraps up their inaugural season this week with a rescheduled home game at 4 p.m. on Tuesday versus The College of Wooster, before traveling to New York to take on Medaille College and Cazenovia College on Saturday and Sunday.
04.11 / TSU Men’s Lacrosse Earns Firs Win in School History
The Tri-State University men’s lacrosse team earned the first win in school history with a 9-2 victory over Hendrix College. The Thunder scored five goals in the second period and held on to the safe lead for the program’s first win. The TSU defense came up big by limiting Hendrix to 15 shots in the game. TSU took 44 shots to control the game.
Cory Childs (Savage, Minn./Prior Lake) led the TSU offense with three goals and one assist. Kyle Mates (Noblesville, Ind./Cathedral) scored two goals and assisted on another. Sean Hitz (Chicago, Ill./St. Rita), JJ Griesinger (Apple Valley, Minn,/Holy Angels), Dan LaFond (Neenah, Wisc./Neenah), and Dylan Weber (Lake Zurich, Ill./Lake Zurich) added one goal apiece. LaFond and Weber also assisted on a goal.
Alex Gregg (Zionsville, Ind./Zionsville) controlled the goal for TSU and had six saves.
Tri-State improves their season record to 1-9, while Hendrix drops to 3-8 on the season. The Thunder will return to action on Sunday at TSU against Carnegie Mellon.
04.05 / Men’s Lacrosse Can’t Catch Up with Adrian’s Early Lead
The TSU men’s lacrosse team couldn’t catch up with Adrian College’s early lead that they took in the first period of the game. At the end of the first period Adrian was up 6-1 over the Thunder. Tri-State was only able to score one more goal in each the second and third period and then two in the final period. Tri-State lost the game 5-16.

JJ Griesinger (Apple Valley, Minn./Holy Angels), Dan Giorgis (Avon, Ohio/Avon) and Alex Gregg (Zionsville, Ind./Zionsville) each scored a goal against the Bulldogs. Assisting in the goals were Kyle Mates (Noblesville, Ind./Cathedral) with three assists and Cory Childs (Savage, Minn./Prior Lake) with one.
Tri-State falls to 0-9 on the season. TSU will return to action on Friday at home against Hendrix College.
03.29 / TSU Men’s Lacrosse Falls To Saint Vincent
The Tri-State University men’s lacrosse come up short against Saint Vincent 1-12. Saint Vincent controlled the face-offs by winning 12 of the 17 opportunities.
Sean Hitz (Chicago, Ill./St. Rita) scored the only goal and was assisted by Dylan Weber (Lake Zurich, Ill./Lake Zurich). Alex Gregg (Zionsville, Ind./Zionsville) had 15 saves while TSU was out shot by Saint Vincent 30-38.
TSU men’s lacrosse drops their season record to 0-8. Saint Vincent picks up their second win against three losses. Tri-State will return to action on Saturday, April 6th at Adrian College.
03.28 / TSU Men’s Lacrosse Defeated by Seton Hill
The Tri-State University men’s lacrosse team traveled to Greensburg, Pa. and fell to Seton Hill by a score of 8-2. Seton Hill was aggressive from the start and held a 13-4 shot advantage in the first quarter and a 2-0 lead on the scoreboard.
Kyle Mates (Noblesville, Ind./Cathedral) pulled the Thunder within two goals with 2:39 remaining in the first half. Dylan Webber (Lake Zurich, Ill./Lake Zurich) assisted the goal. Seton Hill responded with a goal 25 seconds later to take a 4-1 lead at half.
TSU was unable to get any closer as Seton Hill scored three unanswered goals in the third period. Dan LaFond (Neenah, Wis./Neenah) scored the games final goal unassisted with 1:20 remaining in the game.
Tri-State drops their season record to 0-7. Seton Hill improves to 4-5 on the year. TSU will return to action on Saturday when they take on Saint Vincent.
03.26 / Fontbonne Narrowly Escapes TSU with a Victory
The Tri-State University men’s lacrosse team dropped a heartbreaker to Fontbonne University 7-6 at TSU. The Thunder held a 3-2 lead at the break and the game was tied at five heading into the final period.
TSU took a 6-5 lead with 2:08 remaining in the game off a goal by Dylan Webber (Lake Zurich, Ill./Lake Zurich) that was assisted by Tom Hopkins (Chicago, Ill./.St. Rita). Fontbonne would not be denied as they scored back-to-back goals in less than 10 seconds to take the game at 7-6. TSU could not

03.18 / TSU Men’s Lacrosse falls 11-6
The TSU men’s lacrosse team lost to Washington and Jefferson College March, 18th 6-11. The Thunder were held scoreless after the first quarter with Washington and Jefferson up 2-0. Washington and Jefferson held a significant lead by the time the half was over at 8-1. After the third quarter the score was 10-4 and then Washington and Jefferson clenched the win 11-6.
Goalie Alex Gregg (Zionsville, Ind./Zionsville) had 13 saves against their opponent. TSU had four players score to accumulate their six goals. Cory Childs (Savage, Minn./Prior Lake) and JJ Griesinger (Apple Valley, Minn./ Holy Angels) each had two goals for the Thunder. Chipping in with one goal apiece were Dylan Weber (Lake Zurich, Ill./Lake Zurich) and Kyle Mates (Noblesville, Ind./Cathedral).
The men’s lacrosse team is now 0-5 but come back home this Saturday, March 22nd to face The College of Wooster.
03.15 / Late Rally Falls Short for TSU Men’s Lacrosse
The Tri-State University men’s lacrosse team dropped their home-opener 8-9 in overtime against the College of Mount St. Joseph. TSU took an early 3-2 lead after on period, but Mount St. Joseph tied the game at four heading into intermission.
TSU trailed seven to five heading into the fourth quarter. The Thunder offense came alive in the fourth with three goals to tie the game at eight. Charlie Semaan (Commerce Township, Mich./St. Mary’s Prep) tied the game for TSU with an unassisted goal with 1:02 remaining in regulation. Mount St. Joseph captured the victory with a goal by Michael Basch with 46 seconds remaining in the first overtime.
TSU held a 41-33 shot advantage but only controlled five of the 21 face-offs in the game. Kenny Fleming (Plymouth, Minn./Osseo) had seven saves for TSU.

03.08 / TSU Men’s Lacrosse Falls to Christopher Newport
The Tri-State University men’s lacrosse team dropped a contest to Christopher Newport University 15-5. CNU held a 49-15 shot advantage and a 60-38 advantage in ground balls.
TSU took a 1-0 lead early in the first quarter off a goal by JJ Griesinger (Apple Valley, Minn./Holy Angels) that was assisted by Kyle Mates (Noblesville, Ind./Cathedral). CNU tied the game at one with just under six minutes remaining in the first period but the Thunder regained the lead at the end of the first period with a goal by Cory Childs (Savage, Minn./Prior Lake).
Christopher Newport took control of the game with five goals in the second period. Childs scored his second goal of the half to help TSU pull within three at halftime.
CNU opened the second half scoring with two consecutive goals before Mates found the back of the net for TSU. CNU responded with three more goals in the third to take an 11-4 lead. CNU’s offensive attack kept coming in the fourth period as they started with four straight goals. Childs scored his third goal of the game at the end of the fourth to end the day’s scoring.
TSU drops their season record to 0-3, while Christopher Newport improved to 2-3 overall.
03.05 / Slow Start Dooms TSU Men’s Lacrosse
The Tri-State University men’s lacrosse team dropped their season record to 0-2 after fall to Scranton 14-4. Scranton jumped out to an early 5-1 lead in the first quarter and held a 9-1 advantage heading into halftime. TSU outscored Scranton 3-1 in the third quarter but gave up four more Scranton goals in the fourth period for the final score of 14-4.
TSU was hampered by penalties as they gave Scranton nine extra man opportunities which they capitalized on by scoring four goals. Scranton outshot the Thunder by a 37-27 margin and held a 38-31 advantage in ground balls.

03.01 / TSU Men’s Lacrosse Drops Inaugural Game 8-5
The Tri-State University men’s lacrosse team squared off against Marywood University in both team’s inaugural game. Marywood took an 8-5 victory behind five third quarter goals.
Marywood took a 1-0 lead at the 5:07 mark in the first quarter. Kyle Mates (Indianapolis, Ind./Cathedral) responed 37 seconds later with the first goal in TSU history to tie the game at one.
The game remained tied at 1 headed into the third quarter. JT Sears (Champaign, Ill./Champaign Central) gave TSU their only lead of the game. Marywood scored three unanswered goals in the third quarter to take a 4-2 lead before Cory Childs (Savage, Minn./Prior Lake) pulled the Thunder within one goal.
Marywood put the game away with four consecutive goals to take a commanding 8-3 lead. TSU scored the final two goals of the day to make the final 8-5. Dylan Weber (Lake Zurich, Ill./Lake Zurich) scored a goal off an assist from Jordan Richtmeier (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Central). Childs scored his second goal of the day from an assist by Mates to end the day’s scoring.
The Thunder held a 36-27 advantage in shots, including a 20-16 lead in shots on goal. Alex Gregg (Zionsville, Ind./Zionsville) had eight saves in the net for TSU.
