11.03 / TSU Men’s Soccer Falls to MIAA Champion Calvin

The Tri-State University men’s soccer team ended their 2007 season with a 2-1 loss to MIAA champion Calvin College. The Knights took a 1-0 lead in the 14th minute off a corner kick that stood through the first half.

Calvin increased their lead to 2-0 with a goal in the early part of the second half. TSU moved to within one goal at the 61:54 mark with a Van Mang (Battle Creek, Mich./Battle Creek Central) goal that was assisted by Issa Salsa (Flint, Mich./Carmen-Ainsworth).

TSU concludes their season with a record of 2-15-2 overall and 2-10-2 in the MIAA. Calvin improves to 14-4-2 overall and 11-1-1 in conference action.

10.31 /TSU Men’s Soccer Battles Kalamazoo to Deadlock

The Tri-State University men’s soccer team fought to a 0-0 tie with the Kalamazoo Hornets. The Thunder defense held strong behind Peter Gorka’s (North Rocheser, Ind./Chesteron)12 saves. Both teams missed on some great opportunities to score late in the game. In the final overtime period, both teams had three shots on goal.

Kalamazoo is now tied for second place in the MIAA with a conference record of 9-3-1 and an overall record of 12-5-1. TSU moves to a 2-9-2 conference record and an overall record of 2-14-2. The Thunder will finish out the season on Saturday as they host MIAA leader Calvin College at 2 p.m.

10.27 / TSU Men’s Soccer Defeated by Hope College

The Tri-State University men’s soccer team was defeated 5-1 on Saturday at Hope College. The Flying Dutchmen scored on a penalty kick late in the first period to take a 2-0 halftime lead. The Thunder quickly gained momentum in the second period as Rudy Cantrell (Justin, Texas/Northwest) scored on an unassisted goal at the 46 minute mark. Tri-State had their rally stopped as Hope answered the Thunder goal minutes later.

The Thunder drop their record to 2-14-1 overall and 2-9-1 in the conference. Hope College improves to an overall record of 11-6-1 and an MIAA conference record of 8-3-1, as they move within a half game of second place Kalamazoo. TSU will host Kalamazoo College on Wednesday at 4 p.m.

10.23 / TSU Men’s Soccer Defeats Adrian in MIAA Action

The Tri-State University men’s soccer team scored two unanswered goals in the second half to defeated Adrian College 3-2 in MIAA action. TSU scored first with an unassisted goal by Justin Dow (Dewitt, Mich./Dewitt) in the 31st minute.

Adrian took the lead with back-to-back goals within 75 seconds of each other. The score stood at 2-1 heading into halftime.

TSU tied the game quickly in the second half with a Nathan Butler (Yellow Springs, Ohio/Fairborn) goal at the 46:10 mark. Ryan Brennell (St. Louis, Mo./Desmet Jesuit) scored the game-winning goal in the 69th minute.

TSU brings their season record to 2-13-1 overall and 2-8-1 in the MIAA. Adrian drops to 5-10-1 and 3-7-1 in conference play.

10.20 / Albion Shuts Out TSU in Men’s Soccer Action

The Tri-State University men’s soccer team fell to Albion College 4-0 in MIAA play. The Britons scored their first goal in the 14th minute. TSU fought to a 1-0 deficit at the break before Albion erupted for three goals in the second half.

TSU drops their season record to 1-13-1 overall and 1-8-1 in the MIAA. Albion improves to 7-7-1 and 6-3-1 in conference action. Tri-State will return to action at home next Tuesday against Adrian College.

10.17 / TSU Men’s Soccer Drops MIAA Contest to Alma

The Tri-State University men’s soccer team fell to Alma College 2-0 in MIAA action. The teams battled to a scoreless tie at the half before the Scots put two goals through the net in the second half. TSU held a 15-11 shots-on-goal advantage but could not find the back of the net.

The Thunder falls to 1-12-1 on the season and 1-7-1 in conference play. Alma picks up their fourth win of the season and stands at 4-9-2 overall and 2-5-1 in the MIAA. TSU will return to action on Saturday when they travel to Albion College to take on the Britons.

10.13 / TSU Men’s Soccer Fall Short in Low Scoring Battle

The Tri-State University men’s soccer team came up short against Olivet College. The Thunder outscored the Comets 1-0 in the second period but it was not enough to overcome two first period goals. Tri-State outshot Olivet 12-8, including eight second period shots. Kevin Wajert (Defiance, Ohio/Defiance) scored the lone Thunder goal in the 46th minute.

The Thunder record falls to 1-6 in MIAA conference play and 1-11-1 overall. Olivet College improves to 3-5 in the conference and 5-9 overall. The Tri-State University men’s soccer team will travel to Alma College on Wednesday for a 4 p.m. conference game.  

10.09 / League-Leading Calvin Defeats TSU in Men’s Soccer

The Tri-State University men’s soccer team fell to Calvin College 2-0 in MIAA action. The Knights improve their MIAA-leading record to 6-1 and 8-4-1 overall. TSU falls to 1-5-1 in the conference and 1-10-1 on the season.

Calvin broke the scoreless tie in the 51st minute with an unassisted goal and added a second goal in the 73rd minute to take a 2-0 victory. Shots on goal were difficult to come by for both teams as the Knights held a slight 4-3 advantage.

10.06 / Early Goals Defeat TSU Men’s Soccer

The Tri-State University men’s soccer team gave up two goals in the first 17 minutes of the game and fell to MIAA-leading Kalamazoo College 2-1. Both teams battled to an even game with Kalamazoo holding a slight 6-5 advantage in both shots-on-goal and corner kicks.

Joe Ponce (Shipshewana, Ind./Westview) scored the lone TSU goal in the 48th minute off a penalty kick. Peter Gorka (North Rochester, Ind./Chesterton) had four saves in the goal.


TSU falls to 1-9-1 overall and 1-4-1 in the MIAA. Kalamazoo improves to 8-3 and 5-1 in conference play. TSU will return to action on Tuesday to travel to Calvin College to take on the Knights.

10.03 / TSU Men’s Soccer Falls to Hope College

The Tri-State University men’s soccer team dropped an MIAA contest 2-1 at the hands of Hope College. The game remained scoreless for the first 70 minutes when the Flying Dutchmen scored the first goal. Hope added the game-winning goal one minute later to take a 2-0 lead.

Rudy Cantrell (Justin, Texas/Northwest) brought the Thunder within one goal with 12 minutes remaining in the game. Van Mang (Battle Creek, Mich./Battle Creek Central) contributed with his first assist of the season.

Hope improves to 6-5 on the season and 3-2 in the MIAA. TSU falls to 1-8-1 overall and 1-3-1 in conference play. The Thunder will return to action on Saturday when they travel to Kalamazoo College.  

09.29 / TSU Men’s Soccer Earns First Win

The Tri-State University men’s soccer team picked up their first win of the season with a 2-0 shutout at Adrian College. TSU scored both goals early in the game and let their defense seal the victory in the second half.

The Thunder took a 1-0 lead in the 13th minute on a Rudy Cantrell (Justin, Texas/Northwest) goal that was assisted by Kevin Wajert (Defiance, Ohio/Defiance) and Boyd Lewis (Warren, Pa./Eisenhower). Nathan Butler (Yellow Springs, Ohio/Fairborn) connected with BJ Still (Saline, Mich./Saline) at the 27:01 mark to give the Thunder the 2-0 lead.

 

Peter Gorka (North Rochester, Ind./Chesterton) earned his first career shutout with three saves on the day.

Tri-State now stands at 1-7-1 overall and 1-2-1 in the MIAA. Adrian falls to 3-6-1 and 1-3 in conference action.

09.25 / Albion Squeaks by TSU with Late Goal

The Tri-State University men’s soccer team lost an evenly matched MIAA contest against the visiting Britons of Albion College. The stats were almost identical with both teams recording nine shots-on-goal and four corner kicks. The difference in the game was a late goal by the Britons that put them up 2-1 with 5:47 remaining in the game.

Kevin Wajert (Defiance, Ohio/Defiance) put TSU up 1-0 early in the game off an assist from Rudy Cantrell (Justin, Texas/Northwest). The Britons responded with their own first half goal to take a 1-1 tie into halftime. Albion’s Joe Seikel scored the game-winning goal unassisted in the 84th minute.

TSU is 0-7-1 overall on the season and 0-2-1 in the MIAA. Albion improves to 3-5 and 2-1 in conference action. 

09.22 / TSU Men’s Soccer Battles to Tie with Alma

The Tri-State University men’s soccer team had multiple opportunities to score but could not find the back of the net as they surrendered to a 0-0 double overtime tie with the visitng Scots from Alma College. The Thunder held a 25-16 shot advantage but could not put a score on the board.

The Thunder had four shot opportunities in the first overtime but the Alma defense held tight. The TSU defense had to battle in the second overtime period as keeper Peter Gorka (North Rocherster, Ind./Chesterton) had four of his nine saves in the second OT.

TSU remains without a win on the season as their record stands at 0-6-1 and 0-1-1 in the MIAA. Alma is now 2-4-2 overall and 1-0-1 in conference play

09.19 /TSU Men’s Soccer Opens MIAA Play at Olivet

The Tri-State University men’s soccer team opened MIAA play at Olivet College. The host Comets took a 5-2 victory over the Thunder. Olivet took command of the game early with a goal in the seventh minute and held a 2-0 advantage at the break.

TSU came out in the second half and tied the game with back-to-back goals by Joe Ponce (Shipshewana, Ind./Westview) in the 48th and 57th minute of the contest. Ponce’s first goal was off a corner kick from Ryan Brennell (St. Louis, Mo./Desmet Jesuit) and the second goal was off a penalty kick.

The Comets scored the game-winning goal at 60:30 by Josh Van Wagner and assisted by Mike May. May wrapped up the game’s scoring with the final two goals to put the game out of reach for the Thunder.

TSU drops their season record to 0-6 overall and 0-1 in the MIAA. Olivet improves to 3-4 overall and 1-0 in conference play.

09.15 / TSU Men’s Soccer Falls to #5 Ranked Case Western Reserve University

The Tri-State University men’s soccer team fell to Case Western Reserve University 2-0. Case was recently ranked #5 in the nation by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. The Case defense stuck tight as they allowed on one TSU shot on goal in the game. Peter Gorka (North Rochester, Ind./Chesterton) kept the game within reach for the Thunder with seven saves.

TSU drops their season record to 0-5. Case keeps their unbeaten streak alive with their fourth straight victory. TSU will open MIAA action on Wednesday when they travel to Olivet College. 

09.09 / Heartbreak Continues for TSU Men’s Soccer

The Tri-State University men’s soccer team lost their second consecutive game in heartbreaking fashion as Otterbein escaped with a 2-1 victory in the Ralph Ketner Classic. TSU tied the game at one in the 52nd minute. Otterbein scored the game-winning goal with five minutes left. TSU’s valiant effort fell short as time expired with the score standing at Otterbein 2 – TSU 1.

Issa Salsa (Flint, Mich./Carmen-Ainsworth) set up Justin Dow (Dweitt, Mich./Dewitt) for TSU only goal of the game. Peter Gorka (North Rochester, Chesterton) picked up five saves in the net for TSU. 

09.08 / TSU Men’s Soccer Loses Heartbreaker in Ketner Classic

The Tri-State University men’s soccer team opened up play in the two-day Ralph Ketner Classic at TSU. Game one of the day featured Goshen College against Otterbein College. Otterbein picked up a 3-2 victory over the Maple Leafs. TSU dropped a hard-fought battle to Heidelberg 2-1 in the second game of the day.

TSU took an early 1-0 lead off a Kevin Wajert (Defiance, Ohio/Defiance) unassisted goal at the 10:11 mark. Heidelberg answered quickly with a goal at 13:27. The score remained tied at one deep into the second half. Both teams battled back and forth with scoring opportunities that fell just short. Heidelberg capitalized on its possession with the game-winning goal with 2:30 remaining in the game.

Justin Dow (Dewitt, Mich./Dewitt) controlled the net for TSU with 11 saves.

Play will resume tomorrow at TSU in the Ketner Classic. Goshen will square off against Heidelberg at 12 p.m. Otterbein will take on TSU at 2 p.m.

09.02 / Tri-State Men’s Soccer Blanked by Kenyon

The Tri-State University men’s soccer team fell to Kenyon 5-0 in their final game of the Wittenberg Invitational. TSU was limited to three shots in the game. The Thunder falls to 0-2 on the season.

Tri-State will return to action on Saturday and Sunday when they host the Ralph Ketner Classic. Goshen will take on Otterbein in game one Saturday. TSU will square off against Heidelberg at 4 p.m.

09.01 / TSU Men’s Soccer Opens Play at Wittenberg Invitational

The Tri-State University men’s soccer team opened the 2007 season at the Wittenberg University Invitational. TSU fell to host Wittenberg 3-1 in the opening round. The Thunder will return to action tomorrow at 1 p.m. against Kenyon at Wittenberg.

Wittenberg jumped on the board early with a goal at the 14:55 mark and held a 2-0 advantage at the break. The Thunder got on the board at 86:25 after BJ Still (Slaine, Mich./Saline) connected with Justin Dow (Dewitt, Mich./Dewitt) for a goal. Peter Gorka (North Rochester, Ind./Chesterton) picked up five saves in the net for TSU.
