04.26 / Men’s Tennis Finishes 6th in MIAA Tournament

In Kalamazoo, Mich., the MIAA tennis tournament got under way Friday and Saturday afternoon. Match 1 of the tournament, Tri-State was defeated by Albion 7-0. In the singles, #1 Brett Becker (Cincinnati, Ohio/Turpin) was defeated 6-4, 6-3, by Albion’s Brandon Still, while #2 Nick Garstka (New Haven, Ind./New Haven) was beat by Albion’s Andrew Lulek 6-0, 6-2. #3 and #4 singles results from Tim Buchmeier (New Haven, Ind./New Haven) and Issa Salsa (Flint, Mich./Carmen Ainsworth) were not recorded. Mario Bonardi (Buchanan, Mich./Buchanan) and Bradley Wood (Sturgis, Mich./Sturgis) both lost at #5 and #6 singles by scores of 6-1, 6-0 and 6-2, 6-1, respectively. On the doubles side, #1 Becker/Bryan Roth (Topeka, Ind./Westview) and #2 Garstka/ Buchmeier both lost to Albion with the score of 8-2. #3 doubles Salsa/ Bonardi lost to Albion 8-3. Tri-State drops to 6-8 on the season, while Albion improves to 10-6 on the year.

Other matches in the tournament include, Kalamazoo having a first round bye, Calvin defeated Adrian 6-0, and Hope defeated Alma 9-0.

Match 6 between the Thunder and the Bulldogs of Adrian had the Thunder defeating the Bulldogs 9-0. #1 singles Becker defeated Adrian’s Chris Ludwig 6-1 and 6-2, while teammate Garstka defeated Orlo Yeagley of Adrian 6-1, 6-2 for the #2 singles. #3 Buchmeier and teammate Salsa defeated the Bulldogs 6-4, 7-5 and 6-1, 6-2, respectively. #5 and #6 Bonardi and Wood continued the hot streak for the Thunder, as they completed the defeat of Adrian in singles, 6-0 and 6-0, and 6-4, 6-1, respectively. On the doubles, #1 Becker/ Roth and #3 doubles Salsa/Bonardi defeated the Adrian pairs, both with a score of 8-2, while teammates #2 Garstka/ Buchmeier defeated Adrian with a score of 8-3. Adrian drops to 2-16 on the season, while TSU improves to 7-8. The Thunder will now play for 5th place in the overall MIAA Tournament.

Other second round results include Calvin defeating Albion 7-2, and Kalamazoo beating Hope 8-1.

In the 5th place match between the Thunder of Tri-State and the Scots of Alma College, singles went 1-5, while doubles led 2-1, but it wasn’t enough as the Scots defeated TSU 6-3. #1 Becker was the only win for the Thunder on the singles side, as he defeated Chris Noel of Alma 6-4, 6-1. #2 Garstka lost 6-3 and 6-0, while teammate #3 Buchmeier lost 7-5, 6-1. #4 Salsa lost a close battle with three sets, 5-7, 6-4, 6-4. #5 and #6 singles Bonardi and Wood both lost with scores of 6-0, 6-3. On the doubles side, Thunder proved to have the edge over the Scots, but it wasn’t enough to come from behind. #1 Becker/ Roth beat Alma 8-1, while #2 Garstka/Buchmeier beat the Scots 8-6. #3 doubles Salsa/ Bonardi were defeated by Alma 8-4.

With the defeat, the Thunder placed 6th in the MIAA Tournament, while Alma claims 5th place. Kalamazoo will have a berth into NCAA first round with a defeat of Calvin 6-3, with Albion in 3rd place after defeating Hope 5-4.

04.23 / Becker Cruises to Victory at #1 Singles

Tri-State University men’s tennis fell to the visiting Scots of Alma College 7-2. Brett Becker (Cincinnati, Ohio/Turpin) won TSU’s only singles match with a 6-1, 6-1 win at #1 singles. Becker combined with Bryan Roth (Topeka, Ind./Westview) at #1 doubles for an 8-5 TSU victory.

The Thunder concludes their regular season with an overall record of 8-7 and MIAA record of 1-5. Kalamazoo College will host the MIAA Conference Tournament on Friday and Saturday.  

04.21 / Men’s Tennis Earns Non-Conference Win

The Tri-State University men’s tennis team split the singles action but took two of three doubles matches against Bluffton for a 5-4 victory. The Thunder improves their season record to 8-6 while Bluffton falls to 1-14 overall.

Nick Garstka (New Haven, Ind./New Haven) and Tim Buchmeier (New Haven, Ind./New Haven) teamed up for an 8-2 win at #1 doubles. The duo of Mario Bonardi (Buchanan, Mich./Buchanan) and Issa Salsa (Flint, Mich./Carmen Ainsworth) shut out the Beavers in an 8-0 win at #2 doubles.

Buchmeier and Salsa also produced singles wins for TSU. Buchmeier was a 6-2, 6-3 winner at #2 and Salsa took #3 singles by scores of 6-1, 6-3. Brad Wood (Sturgis, Mich./Sturgis) battled to a 6-4, 6-7 (5-7), 6-1 win at #4 singles. 

04.17 / Kalamazoo Defeats TSU in Men’s Tennis

The Tri-State University men’s tennis team suffered a 7-2 loss to Kalamazoo College. Kalamazoo took two of the three doubles matches and five of the six singles on their way to a victory.

Tim Buchmeier (New Haven, Ind./New Haven) and Nick Garstka (New Haven, Ind./New Haven) teamed up for TSU’s doubles victory. They took an 8-5 decision at #2 doubles. Brad Wood (Sturgis, Mich./Sturgis) took the #6 singles match by scores of 6-4, 6-0.

04.15 / TSU Men’s Tennis Falls to Albion

The Tri-State University men’s tennis team dropped an MIAA contest to Albion College 0-9. The Thunder drop their season record to 7-5 overall and 1-3 in the MIAA. Albion improves to 10-5 on the season and 3-1 in conference action.

The Britons swept the doubles competition by scores of 8-2 (#1), 8-4 (#2), and 8-4 (#3). Brett Becker (Cincinnati, Ohio/Turpin) lost a hard fought battle at #1 singles 7-6 (8-6), 6-3. Mario Bonardi (Buchanan, Mich./Buchanan) dropped a close match 6-3, 5-7, 10-6 at #5 singles.

04.12 / TSU Men’s Tennis Drops MIAA Contest to Hope

The Tri-State University men’s tennis team lost to MIAA foe Hope College 8-1 at the DeWitt Tennis Center in Holland, Mich. Bryan Roth (Topeka, Ind./Westview) won the Thunder’s only match at #6 singles with a 6-3, 7-6 (6) win.

The Thunder drop their season record to 7-4 overall and 1-2 in conference play. The Flying Dutchmen remain undefeated in MIAA action at 3-0 and are 12-6 on the year.

04.05 / TSU Men’s Tennis Sweeps Adrian

The Tri-State University men’s tennis team picked up a 9-0 MIAA victory over Adrian College. The Thunder improve their season record to 7-3 overall and 1-1 in conference action. Adrian falls to 2-12 overall and 0-5 in the MIAA.

Brett Becker (Cincinnati, Ohio/Turpin) and Bryan Roth (Topeka, Ind./Westview) teamed for an 8-4 win at #1 doubles, The #2 doubles duo of Nick Garstka (New Haven, Ind./New Haven) and Tim Buchmeier (New Haven, Ind./New Haven) earned an 8-6 decision. Issa Salsa (Flint, Mich./Carmen Ainsworth) and Mario Bonardi (Buchanan, Mich./Buchanan) took an 8-6 victory at #3 doubles.

Becker was a 6-2, 6-1 winner at #1 singles and Garstka was a 6-2, 6-4 victor at #2 singles. Buchmeier was a 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (5) winner at #3 singles. Salsa battled to a 7-6, 6-4 win at #4 singles. Bonardi and Roth took matching 6-2, 6-0 wins at #5 and #6 singles respectively.

04.02 / Calvin Blanks TSU Men’s Tennis

The Tri-State University men’s tennis team was defeated in MIAA action by Calvin College 9-0.  Calvin swept the doubles by scores of 8-4, 8-3, and 8-2.

Brett Becker (Cincinnati, Ohio/Turpin) lost #1 singles by a score of 6-1, 6-3. Nicholas Garstka (New Haven, Ind./New Haven) fell 6-2, 6-2 at #2 singles. Tim Buchmeier (New Haven, Ind./New Haven) and Issa Salsa (Flint, Mich./Carmen Ainsworth) dropped the #3 and #4 singles by scores of 6-2, 6-2 and 6-3, 6-0. Calvin took the #5 position by scores of 6-1, 6-2 and the #6 position 6-2, 6-1.

03.30 / TSU Men’s Tennis Hosts Thunder Doubles Tournament

The TSU Thunder men’s tennis team finished second behind a strong Alma College team in the third annual Thunder Doubles Tennis Tournament held at Minges Creek Athletic Club in Battle Creek, Michigan on Sunday, March 30th, 2008. This round robin doubles event was expected to be and was a highly contested affair. Grand Rapids Community College finished a close third, while Adrian College had a rough day not winning a match.

The last match of the day was an 8-4 victory for sophomore Jared Stump (Angola, Ind./Angola) and his partner Brad Wood (Sturgis, Mich./Sturgis) which gave them their third win of the day to win the #4 doubles flight. Except for a close 9-8 match victory for Alma College over Grand Rapids Community College’s #4 doubles team the tournament would have finished with a three way tie at the top between Alma College, Grand Rapids Community College, and the TSU Thunder. 

Alma College finished the day with nine match wins followed by Tri-State University with eight match wins and Grand Rapids Community College had seven match wins. 

A sign of the strength of the draw was that at #1 and #2 doubles, Alma College, Grand Rapids Community College, and Tri-State University all tied with two wins each.  The #1 doubles team of Bryan Roth (Topeka, Ind./Westview) and Brett Becker of Cincinnati, Ohio/Turpin) defeated both Alma College and Adrian College but suffered a tough 8-6 loss against Grand Rapids Community College.  Tri-State University’s #2 doubles team of Nick Garstka (New Haven, Ind./New Haven) and Tim Buchmeier (New Haven, Ind./New Haven) picked up their two wins against Grand Rapids Community College and Adrian College but loss to Alma College by a score of 8-2.

The difference in the tournament may have come at #3 doubles where Alma College swept the flight.  Those points helped seal their team’s victory.  Tri-State University’s #3 doubles team of Mario Bonardi (Buchanan, Mich./Buchanan) and Issa Salsa of Flint, Mich./Carmen Ainsworth) won one match by defeating Adrian College by a score of 8-1.

 

The TSU Thunder men open their conference schedule on Wednesday April 2nd when they travel to Grand Rapids to take on nationally ranked Calvin College.

03.29 / TSU Men’s Tennis Team Defeated at Spring Arbor

The TSU men’s tennis team was defeated by Spring Arbor 8-1. The #2 doubles duo of Tim Buchmeier (New Haven, Ind./New Haven) and Nick Garstka (New Haven, Ind./New Haven) picked up TSU’s only win with an 8-2 victory.

03.26 / TSU Men’s Tennis Sweeps Doubles in Victory over Defiance

The Tri-State University men’s tennis team opened the match with Defiance College by sweeping the doubles play. The Thunder dropped sets at #1 and #2 singles but were victorious by straight set wins at 3-6 singles.

Brett Becker (Cincinnati, Ohio/Turpin) teamed with Bryan Roth (Topeka, Ind./Westview) for an 8-5 victory at #1 doubles to start things off for TSU. Nick Garstka (New Haven, Ind./New Haven) and Tim Buchmeier (New Haven, Ind./New Haven) took an 8-0 shutout at #2 doubles. Issa Salsa (Flint, Mich./Carmen Ainsworth) and Mario Bonardi (Buchanan, Mich./Buchanan) paired for an 8-2 victory at #3 doubles.

Buchmeier was a 7-5, 7-5 winner at #3 singles for TSU. Salsa captured a 6-3, 6-4 win at #4 singles and Bonardi earned a 6-1, 6-3 victory at #5 singles. Roth wrapped up the singles wins at #6 with a 6-0, 6-0 victory.

03.13 / TSU Men’s Tennis Defeats Manchester 6-3

The Tri-State University men’s tennis team used five wins in singles competition to defeat Manchester 6-3. Playing the number one spot, Tim Buchmeier (New Haven, Ind./New Haven) defeated Andrew Tkacs 6-4, 6-3. In the third spot was Jared Stump (Angola, Ind./Angola) beating Jeremy Patterson 6-1, 6-1. Nick Savage (Wauseon, Ohio/Wauseon) played the four spot and picked up a win 6-3, 6-4. Sean Matusko (Richmond, Mich./Armada) won 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 at number five. Finally, Aaron Brazier (Wauseon, Ohio/Wauseon) in the sixth spot won 6-2, 7-5.

As for doubles competition, Buchmeier and Bradley Wood (Sturgis, Mich./Sturgis) of TSU beat Manchester 8-3 at #1 doubles. Manchester defeated Tri-State’s second and third doubles, 8-6 and 8-4.

03.10 /TSU Men’s Tennis Completes Successful Spring Trip

The Tri-State University men’s tennis team completed their spring trip to Hilton Head, S.C. with a 4-1 record. TSU opened the trip with an 8-1 victory over Lynchburg College. The Thunder swept Juniata College 9-0 on their second day of competition and took a 7-2 victory over Villa Julie College. TSU defeated Elizabethtown College 8-1 and fell to Malone College 0-9 for their only loss of the trip. The Thunder’s match against Covenant was cancelled due to rain.

Brett Becker (Cincinnati, Ohio/Turpin) competed at #1 singles and acquired a 4-1 record to start the season. Tim Buchmeier (New Haven, Ind./New Haven) also finished the week with a 4-1 record at #3 singles. Nick Garstka (New Haven, Ind./New Haven) had a 3-2 week at #4 singles for TSU.

The TSU doubles team showed a lot of promise throughout the week. Becker and Bryan Roth (Topeka, Ind./Westview) teamed up at #1 singles for a 4-1 record. Buckmeier and Garstka partnered for #2 doubles and went 4-1.
