04.26 / Women’s Tennis Finishes 7th in MIAA Tournament

In match one of the MIAA Tournament, Tri-State was defeated by Albion 6-0. In the singles, #1 Shelley Zamler of Albion defeated Amber Crosby (Holly, Mich./Holly) 6-0, 6-1. #3 singles Stephanie Steiner (Hillsdale, Mich./Hillsdale) was defeated by Albion’s Vic Seiter 6-0 and 6-1. Jennifer Wall was unable to score as she lost to #6 singles Anna Gundersen by straight sets of 6-0, 6-0. #2 singles as well as #4 and #5 games were left unfinished. On the doubles side, Vic Seiter/Shelley Zamler of Albion defeated Crosby/Amanda Waidely (Hillsdale, Mich./Hillsdale) 8-1. Albion’s #2 doubles Michelle Mulder/Mara Rendina beat Amanda Steiner (Hillsdale, Mich./Hillsdale)/Kara Kauffman (Shipshewana, Ind./Westview) 8-0, while Dana Dunham (Angola, Ind./Angola)/Stephanie Steiner lost 8-2 to Anna Gundersen/Emily Gundersen. Albion improves to 16-2, while The Thunder drops to 3-12.

Other matches in the tournament include, Kalamazoo defeating Saint Mary’s 5-1, Hope defeating Alma 6-0, Calvin defeated Adrian 5-0, and Albion defeated Kalamazoo 5-2.

Match six between the Thunder and the Belles of Saint Mary’s saw a defeat of the Thunder 5-1. Camille Gebert (St. Mary’s) defeated Crosby 6-3 and 6-1, while Betsy Reed of St. Mary’s defeated Stephanie Steiner 6-0, 6-0 and Wall was defeated by Laura Arnold (St. Mary’s) 6-0, 6-1. On the doubles side, #3 doubles Stephanie Steiner/ Dunham defeated the Belles Jessica Camp/Franca Peluso 9-8, while #1 Crosby/ Waidely lost 8-2 and #2 Amanda Steiner/ Kauffman were defeated 9-8.

The final matches of the night had Calvin defeating Hope 6-3, Alma beating Adrian 5-4, Saint Mary’s then turned around to beat Alma 5-2 for 5th place.

In the seventh place match between the Thunder of Tri-State and the Bulldogs of Adrian, singles went 4-2, while doubles lead 2-1 for a 6-3 finish over the Bulldogs. #1 Crosby lost 6-2, 5-7 and 7-5, while #2 Amanda Steiner lost 7-6, 7-4 and 7-5 to the Bulldogs. #3 Stephanie Steiner defeated her Bulldog 7-6 and 9-7 while teammates #4 Waidely beat Leeann Brooks of Adrian 6-3, 6-3. #5 Kauffman beat Bulldog Katie MacFarlan 6-4 and 6-2 while Dana Dunham outlasted Adrian 6-2 and 6-3. On the doubles side, #1 doubles Crosby/ Waidely lost 8-3, while #2 Kauffman/Amanda Steiner and #3 Dunham/Stephanie Steiner defeated the Bulldogs 8-4 and 8-2, respectively. The win puts the Thunder at 7th place in the MIAA, while Adrian drops to 8th.

Hope clinched 3rd place with a 5-1 win over Kalamazoo, and Albion earned a berth to the NCAA tournament by defeated Calvin 5-4.

04.15 / Women’s Tennis Wins First MIAA Match of the Season

The Tri-State University women’s tennis team won their first MIAA match of the season with a 7-2 victory over visiting Olivet College. The Thunder took two of the three doubles matches and five of the six singles matches for the victory.

Amanda Steiner (Hillsdale, Mich./Hillsdale) and Kara Kauffman (Shipshewana, Ind./Westview) battled to an 8-6 win at #2 doubles. The #3 doubles duo of Stephanie Steiner (Hillsdale, Mich./Hillsdale) and Dana Dunham (Angola, Ind./Angola) were 8-1 winners for TSU.

Amanda Steiner, Stephanie Steiner, Kauffman, and Dunham swept through the match with singles victories also. Amanda Steiner took a 6-4, 6-4 win at #2 singles. Stephanie Steiner was a 6-4, 6-3 winner at #3 singles. Kauffman earned a 6-3, 6-4 win at #5 singles and Dunham picked up a 6-1, 6-2 win at #6 singles. Amber Crosby (Holly, Mich./Holly) picked up a singles win at #1 with a 6-4, 6-2 win.

The Thunder improves their season record to 3-10 overall and 1-6 in the MIAA. Olivet falls to 2-12 overall and remain winless in the MIAA at 0-8.

04.12 / Saint Mary’s Defeats TSU Women’s Tennis

The Tri-State University women’s tennis team lost to Saint Mary’s 8-1. The Belles swept the singles competition. The TSU #2 doubles pair of Kara Kauffman (Shipshewana, Ind./Westview) and Amanda Steiner (Hillsdale, Mich./Hillsdale) was an 8-5 winner for TSU’s only victory of the day.

Tri-State is now 2-10 on the season and 0-6 in MIAA play. Saint Mary’s improves to 6-9 overall and 2-3 in conference action. The Thunder will return to play on Tuesday against Olivet College at TSU.

04.10 / Amanda Steiner Earns Win Against Hope

The Tri-State University women’s tennis team dropped an MIAA contest at Hope College 8-1. Amanda Steiner (Hillsdale, Mich./Hillsdale) enjoyed the Thunder’s only win with a 1-6, 6-2, 1-0 (4) victory at #2 singles.

Hope improves their season record to 10-5 overall and 3-1 in the MIAA. TSU falls to 2-9 overall and 0-5 in conference action.

04.09 / Calvin Defeats TSU in MIAA Women’s Tennis Action

The Tri-State University women’s tennis team was defeated by MIAA foe Calvin College 8-1. Dana Dunham (Angola, Ind./Angola) picked up the lone win for TSU at #5 singles with a 6-2, 6-0 win.

TSU drops their season record to 2-8 overall and 0-4 in the MIAA. Calvin improves to 13-3 overall and remains undefeated in conference play at 4-0.

04.05 / Kauffman Picks Up Two Wins Against Adrian

The Tri-State University women’s tennis team was defeated by Adrian College 7-2 in MIAA action. Kara Kauffman (Shipshewana, Ind./Westview) had a hand in both TSU victories. At #4 singles, Kauffman was a 7-6, 6-7 (10-8) winner. She teamed with Amanda Steiner (Hillsdale, Mich./Hillsdale) at #2 doubles for an 8-6 win.

Tri-State falls to 2-6 on the season and 0-3 in the MIAA. Adrian improves to 4-9 overall and 1-4 in conference play. The Thunder will return to action on Monday, April 7 at Huntington University.

04.01 / Kalamazoo Women’s Tennis Shuts Out TSU

The Tri-State University women’s tennis team dropped a 9-0 contest to MIAA foe Kalamazoo College. Kalamazoo is currently ranked 13th in the region.

The Thunder’s closest match of the day was at #1 doubles where Amber Crosby (Holly, Mich./Holly) and Amanda Waidely (Hillsdale, Mich./Hillsdale) went down 8-5.

The Thunder drop their season record to 2-4 and 0-2 in the MIAA. Kalamazoo improves to 8-4 overall and remain undefeated in conference play at 3-0. The Thunder will return to action on Thursday, April 3 at Spring Arbor University.

03.29 / TSU Women’s Tennis Drops MIAA Opener

The Tri-State University women’s tennis team fell to Alma College 6-3 in their MIAA season opener. Alma jumped out to an early lead with a sweep of the doubles play. The Thunder responded with a split of the singles.

Amber Crosby (Holly, Mich./Holly) battled to a three set win at #1 singles by scores of 6-4, 3-6, 7-5. Amanda Steiner (Hillsdale, Mich./Hillsdale) was a 7-5, 6-4 winner at #2 singles. Kara Kauffman (Shipshewana, Ind./Westview) earned a 6-4, 1-6, 10-4 win at #4 singles for TSU.

Tri-State falls to 2-3 on the season. Alma improves their season record to 10-4. The Thunder will try for their home opener on Tuesday against Kalamazoo College.

03.16 / TSU Women’s Tennis Hosts Thunder Doubles Classic

On Sunday March 16th Tri-State University hosted the 2008 TSU Thunder Tennis Classic at Minges Creek Athletic Club in Battle Creek, Michigan. Four women’s tennis teams, Tri-State University, Aquinas College, Kalamazoo Valley Community College, and Adrian College participated in this four-team round robin doubles event.

At the end of the day the Aquinas College Saints showed their strength by winning the event in easy fashion by winning 11 of 12 matches. Their only loss came at #3 doubles when Kalamazoo Valley Community College won the eight game pro-set 8-5. Kalamazoo Valley Community College came in a distant second with 7 wins.

Tri-State University finished 3rd with three wins but suffered a blow when senior, and #1 doubles player, Dana Dunham (Angola, Ind./Angola) turned an ankle in the warm up and after the first match was unable to play for the rest of the day.  The #2 doubles team of seniors, Amanda Steiner (Hillsdale, Mich./Hillsdale) and Kara Kauffman (Shipshewana, Ind./Westview) posted a two win and one loss record for the day by defeating KVCC and Adrian College and losing to Aquinas College by the score of 8-4. Tri-State University’s #3 doubles team of Stephanie Steiner (Hillsdale, Mich./Hillsdale) and Jennifer Wall (New Haven, Ind./New Haven) picked up the team’s 3rd win of the day by defeating Adrian College by the score of 8-5. 

The Lady Thunder opens their M.I.A.A. Conference schedule at home on Tuesday, March 25 when they face Hope College of Holland, Mich.

03.10 / TSU Women’s Tennis Goes 2-2 at Hilton Head

The Tri-State University women’s tennis team went 2-2 over spring break at Hilton Head, S.C. TSU opened the trip with wins over Lynchburg College 9-0 and Juniata College 7-2. The Thunder fell to Elizabethtown College 1-8 and Lebanon Valley College 2-7. TSU’s match against Covenant was cancelled due to rain.

Amber Crosby (Holly, Mich./Holly) started the season 3-1 at #1 singles for TSU. Dana Dunham (Angola, Ind./Angola) also posted a 3-1 record at #5 singles.

The #2 doubles team of Kara Kauffman (Shipshewana, Ind./Westview) and Amanda Steiner (Hillsdale, Mich./Hillsdale) had a 3-1 mark to lead the Thunder.

TSU will return to action on Sunday when they host the Thunder Doubles tournament at Battle Creek, Mich.
