For the past two seasons the Tri-State University women’s tennis team has had considerable success. In 2006, the women’s tennis team finished the regular season with 11 wins and seven losses. With a tougher schedule and a few matches cancelled because of weather, the team finished the 2007 regular season with a respectable eight win and nine loss record.
Going into the 2008 season, the Lady Thunder returns an experienced squad, but will miss senior and #1 singles player, Holly Kimball of Sturgis, Mich., due to graduation. Kimball was the first TSU tennis player to be named to the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) All-Conference Team, and was also the first recipient of the Karen Caine Award by the MIAA for her academic achievements.
Coach Tim Sullivan starts his second season with a talented and experienced squad with four seniors, Amanda Steiner, Kara Kauffman, Stephanie (Waidely) Steiner, and Dana Dunham in the lineup. These seniors are special, and are doing everything in their power to make this year special. With juniors Amber Crosby and Amanda Waidely also adding to the team’s strength, the goal of winning 10 matches is well within their reach. The challenge facing coach Sullivan’s team is discovering who will step up to earn the position of #1 singles.
The women’s tennis team at Tri-State University is a great example of NCAA Division III athletics. Besides having success on the court, the women’s tennis team has held the record for the highest GPA on campus of all the TSU athletic teams for three years in a row. With a trip to Hilton Head Island, S.C., on the docket in March and another strong conference schedule set in April, the 2008 TSU women’s tennis team will be challenged again to reach its goals.
