03.17 / Posa and Wight Named NWCA Scholar All-American

Tri-State University junior wrestlers Louis Posa (Tecumseh, Mich./Clinton) and Bryan Wight (Fort Wayne, Ind./Homestead) were selected as members of the NWCA Division III Scholar All-American Wresting Team for 2007-08.

To be eligible for consideration as a scholar all-american, the athlete must have a GPA of at least 3.2 for two consecutive semesters, wrestle in half of the team’s meets, place in the NCAA Regional or win 66% of their matches.

Posa is a math education major that has been named a NWCA Scholar All-American for the second consecutive year. Wight is majoring in mechanical engineering and has been honored by the NWCA for the first time in his career. A total of 102 NCAA Division III wrestlers were named scholar all-americans by the NWCA.  

02.23 / TSU Wrestling Season Ends at Midwest Regional

The Tri-State University wrestling team ended their season at the NCAA Midwest Regional hosted by Wabash College. The Thunder finished in fourth place with 87.5 points. Delaware Valley College took the top team honors with 191.0 points. Olivet College was second, followed by Case Western Reserve University in third.

Nick Kraus (Rolling Prairie, Ind./New Prairie) and Louis Posa (Tecumseh, Mich./Clinton) highlighted the Thunder effort with second place finishes. Kraus and Posa were both seeded second in the tournament at 174 and 184 pounds respectively.

Thomas Pompei (Fishers, Ind./Hamilton Southeastern) and Alex Fleet (Lowell, Mich./Lowell) captured third place finishes for the Thunder.  

02.09 / Posa and Fleet Capture Midstates Championships

The Tri-State University wrestling team placed third for the second consecutive year in the Midstates Conference Tournament hosted by Rose-Hulman. Olivet College took the top team spot with five individual champions.

Louis Posa (Tecumseh, Mich./Clinton) and Alex Fleet (Lowell, Mich./Lowell) were named conference champions at 184 pounds and 197 pounds respectively.

Posa was seeded #1 and drew a bye in the first round. He defeated Dayne Fletke from Olivet in the second round 18-3. Posa captured the championship with a victory in the second set of overtime against Mount Saint Joseph’s Chad Craft.

Fleet defeated Cody Johnson from Wabash with an 8-1 decision. Fleet took the #2 seed into the championship bout against top seeded Pat Truster from Mount Saint Joseph and came away with a 5-3 win for the championship.

Thomas Pompei (Fishers, Ind./Hamilton Southeastern) went 2-1 and brought home a second place finish at 133 pounds. Bryan Wight (Fort Wayne, Ind./Homestead) took second at 141 pounds with a 1-1 record. Nick Kraus (Rolling Prairie, Ind./New Prairie) was seeded third and went 2-1 to take second at 174 pounds. 

02.02 / Wrestling Competes in “Pete Willson” Wheaton Invitational

The Tri-State University wrestling team finished 18th out of 27 schools at the “Pete Willson” Invitational hosted by Wheaton College. UW La Crosse took the top team honors with two individual champions and three runners-up.

Louis Posa (Tecumseh, Mich./Clinton) led the way for TSU with a fourth place finish at 184 pounds with four wins. Bryan Wight (Fort Wayne, Ind./Homestead) won his first two matches at 141 pounds and picked up four points. Nick Kraus (Rolling Prairie, Ind./New Prairie) scored 3.5 points for the Thunder at 174 pounds with two wins.

Tri-State will return to the mat on Saturday when they travel to Rose-Hulman for the Mid States Conference Championship. Competition will begin at 9 a.m.

01.26 / TSU Finishes 2-2 at Monon Bell Duals

The Tri-State University wrestling team opened competition at the Wabash College Monon Bell Duals with a 29-18 victory over Knox. Thomas Pompei  (Fishers, Ind./Hamilton Southeastern) won by pin in 1:06 at 141 pounds. Levi Mundy (Huntington, Ind./Huntington North) and Matt Murray (Bollinbrook, Ill./Naperville Central) earned wins by technical fall. Mundy was a 16-0 winner in 3:37 at 125 pounds. Murray was victorious at 20-4 in 6:00 at 149 pounds.

In round two, TSU was a 27-15 winner over Lincoln. Pompei and Alex Fleet (Lowell, Mich./Lowell) both earned pins in the round. Pompei pinned his opponent in 3:01, Fleet earned his pin in 5:20.

TSU fell to Muskegon 34-13 in round four. Pompei picked up his third pin of the day in 4:38. Bryan Wight (Fort Wayne, Ind./Homestead) and Justin Talkington (Highland, Ind./Highland) earned wins for the Thunder over Muskegon.

Ohio Northern defeated TSU 42-3 in the Thunder’s final match of the day. Pompei continued his strong wrestling and picked up TSU’s only victory by an 8-7 decision.

01.19 / Pompei Earns Championship at Spartan Mat Classic

Thomas Pompei (Fishers, Ind./Hamilton Southeastern) went 4-0 on the day and earned the 133 pound championship at the Spartan Mat Classic. As a team, the Thunder finished third with a first place finish, two seconds, and two thirds. 

Pompei was seeded first and earned a 9-2 decision over James Fisher from Heidelberg College in the opening round. In the second round, he took a 18-4 major decision over Ross George from Wisconsin-Platteville. Pompei advanced to the championship match with a 5-0 win over Tyler Voth from the University of Indianapolis. Pompei earned the championship with a win by fall in 2:08 over Ethan Harris.

Bryan Wight (Fort Wayne, Ind./Homestead) and Nick Kraus (Rolling Prairie, Ind./New Prairie) earned second place finishes for the Thunder. Wight earned a 12-10 win in the opening round and won by forfeit in his second match of the day. He suffered a 4-0 loss in the championship bout at 141 pounds.

Kraus had the top seed at 174 pounds and received a bye in the opening round. He earned a 12-1 victory in the second round, a 13-4 decision in the third round, and an 8-6 win to advance to the championship. He fell in the championship 11-4.

Louis Posa (Tecumseh, Mich./Clinton) and Alex Fleet (Lowell, Mich./Lowell) took third place finishes. Posa was seeded #1 at 184 pounds but lost his second round bout. He then fought back with four straight wins to secure the third place finish. Fleet was victorious in his first two rounds before falling to the eventual champion in the third round. He then took two victories to capture third place.  

01.13 / TSU Wrestling Earns Two Victories at Indiana’s Best Duals

The Tri-State University wrestling team went 2-0 on Sunday at the 2008 Indiana’s Best Duals hosted by Wabash College. TSU picked up a 29-15 victory over Wabash and a 46-9 win against Rose-Hulman.

TSU started the bout with Wabash with two consecutive pins. Levi Mundy (Huntington, Ind./Huntington North) earned a pin in 5:51 at 125 pounds. Josh Billiau (Westland, Mich./Franklin) followed that with a pin in 3:30 at 133 pounds to get TSU off to a hot start. Ryan Lineberry (Fort Wayne, Ind./Snider) won by technical fall 18-2 at 157 pounds. Louis Posa (Tecumseh, Mich./Clinton) and Alex Fleet (Lowell, Mich./Lowell) added victories for TSU at 184 and 197 pounds respectively.

Billiau earned his second pin of the day in 1:25 against Rose-Hulman. Matt Murray (Bollinbrook, Ill./Naperville Central), Nick Kraus (Rolling Prairie, Ind./New Prairie), and Fleet picked up pins for the Thunder. Murray earned a pin at 149 pounds in 3:53. Kraus earned a quick victory at 174 pounds with a pin in 56 seconds. Fleet earned a pin in 6:12 at 197 pounds. Posa won a 15-4 major decision at 184 pounds for TSU.

01.06 / TSU Wrestling Hosts Thunder Duals

The Tri-State University wrestling team hosted Muskegon Community College and Olivet College in the Thunder Duals at Hershey Hall. Olivet defeated Muskegon 33-12 in the opening match of the day. TSU defeated Muskegon 33-15 and fell to Olivet 34-12.

Josh Billiau (Westland, Mich./Franklin) went 2-0 on the day at 133 pounds. He earned a 6-4 decision over Muskegon and a 9-7 overtime decision against Olivet. Bryan Wight (Fort Wayne, Ind./Homestead) went undefeated on the day with a forfeit victory against Muskegon and a 7-2 win over Olivet at 141 pounds. Nick Kraus (Rolling Prairie, Ind./New Prairie) won by forfeit against Muskegon at 174 pounds and won by fall in 2:47 against Olivet.

12.15 / TSU Wrestling Competes at ONU Invitational

The Tri-State University wrestling team traveled to Ohio Northern University to compete in the ONU Invitational. The invitational consisted of wrestlers from 18 schools. The Thunder had four wrestlers place in the top eight at the invitational.

Louis Posa (Tecumseh, Mich./Clinton) led the way for the Thunder as runner-up in the 184lbs division. At 174lbs, Nick Kraus (Rolling Prairie, Ind./New Prairie) was the third place finisher. Bryan Wight (Fort Wayne, Ind./Homestead) took seventh place at 141lbs. In the 133lbs tournament, Thomas Pompei (Fishers, Ind./Hamilton Southeastern) finished fourth for TSU.

The Thunder will take a break from action for the holidays. TSU will continue action on the mat Sunday, January 6th. Tri-State will host the Thunder Duals starting at 11 a.m.

12.08 / Wight and Posa Capture Little State Championships

Bryan Wight (Fort Wayne, Ind./Homestead) and Louis Posa (Tecumseh, Mich./Clinton) captures Tri-State’s first Little State Wrestling Tournament titles. Wight was seeded #2 at 141 pounds and went 3-0 to secure the title. Wight had a bye for round one and won a 6-1 decision over Mt. St. Joe’s Dave Harris. In the semi-finals, Wight took an 8-2 decision over Tom Griffin from Mt. St. Joe. Wight posted a 5-2 win over the number one seed, Matt Irwin from the University of Indianapolis to capture the 141 pound title.

Posa took the number one seed and a 3-0 record to take the title at 184 pounds. Posa defeated Billy Grove of Mt. St. Joe in his first match by fall in 0:56 and won a 9-4 decision over Kevin Smith from the University of Indianapolis to advance to the championship bout. Posa battled to a close 3-2 decision over Chad Craft from Mt. St. Joe who was seeded two.

Nick Kraus (Rolling Prairie, Ind./New Prairie) won his first three matches to advance to the championship bout at 174 pounds. Kraus placed second after falling to Kevin Flinn from the University of Indianapolis.

Thomas Pompei (Fishers, Ind./Hamilton Southeastern) wrestled to a fifth place finish with a record of 4-2.

12.04 / Thunder Wrestling Defeated by ONU in Close Battle

The Tri-State University wrestling team was defeated by the Ohio Northern Polar Bears 16-19. The Polar Bears won the first match of the night but the Thunder followed with two straight victories to take the lead. The Bears then took control of the dual with four straight wins. The Thunder went on to win the last two matches of the night but it was too little too late.

Thomas Pompei (Fishers, Ind./Hamilton Southeastern) was victorious in a close 7-5 battle at 133 pounds. Bryan Wight (Fort Wayne, Ind./Homestead) followed up with a 10-3 decision at 141 pounds. Louis Posa (Tecumseh, Mich./Clinton) picked up some momentum for the Thunder with a major decision, 19-5, at 184 pounds. Alex Fleet (Lowell, Mich,./Lowell) and Mike Dosal (Saginaw, Mich./Arthur Hill) each won their decisions by five points at 197 and heavyweight, respectively.

The Thunder wrestling team will continue action as they travel to the University of Indianapolis to wrestle in the Little State Tournament on Friday, December 7th.

11.30 / TSU Wrestling Defeats Manchester College

The Tri-State University wrestling team captured a 30-17 victory at Manchester College. Tri-State picked up three decisions by pins. Thomas Pompei (Fishers, Ind./Hamilton Southeastern) won by pin in 1:43 at 141 pounds. Zane Stenz (Alpena, Mich./Alpena) earned a pin in 6:55 at 157 pounds. Louis Posa (Tecumseh, Mich./Clinton) won by pin in 7:57 at 189 pounds.

Kyle Pittman (Greensburg, Ind./Greensburg) won by major decision oat 149 pounds by a score of 10-1. Mike Dosal (Saginaw, Mich./Arthur Hill) took a 3-0 win in the heavyweight division.

TSU will return to action at Hershey Hall on Tuesday when they host Ohio Northern.  

11.17 / TSU Wrestling Goes 3-1 at Olivet College Duals

The Tri-State University wrestling team took three victories in four dual matches Saturday at the Olivet College Comet Duals. TSU opened the day with a 22-16 win over Mount Union then took a 26-11 victory over Baldwin-Wallace. The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point took a 35-18 victory from the Thunder. TSU bounced back with a 44-9 win over Rose-Hulman to end the day.

Louis Posa (Tecumesh, Mich./Clinton) went 4-0 on the day at 184 pounds. He earned a 20-3 win over Mount Union, a 7-3 decision over Baldwin-Wallace, a pin in 4:43 over Wisconsin-Stevens Point, and a 16-1 victory over Rose-Hulman.

The duo of Nick Kraus (Rolling Prairie, Ind./New Prairie) and Cass Settlemyre (Logansport, Ind./Pioneer) combined to go 4-0 at 174 pounds. Kraus earned a 16-4 win over Mount Union, a 7-0 win over Baldwin-Wallace, and a 7-3 win over Wisconsin-Stevens Point. Settlemyre took a 9-3 win over Rose-Hulman to secure the sweep at 174.

11.13 / TSU Wrestling Falls Just Short to #4 Heidelberg

The Tri-State University wrestling team lost 17-22 to fourth ranked Heidelberg College. The Thunder battled until the end as they held a one point advantage heading into the final match of the night.

Nick Kraus (Rolling Prairie, Ind./New Prairie) controlled his match and was able to pin his opponent in 4:59 minutes. Kraus wrestled the 174 pound match for the Thunder. Bryan Wight (Fort Wayne, Ind./Homestead) and Louis Posa (Tecumseh, Mich./Clinton) won by major decision at 141 pounds and 184 pounds, respectively. Thomas Pompei (Fishers, Ind./Hamilton Southeastern) wrestled at 133 pounds and won in overtime 8-6.

The Thunder wrestlers will continue competition as they travel to Olivet, Michigan on Saturday. The dual match verse Olivet is set to start at 9 a.m.

11.10 / Thunder Wrestling Takes Two at Muskegon Duals

The Tri-State University wrestling team went 2-0 at the Muskegon Community College Duals on November 9. TSU picked up their first career shutout with a 52-0 win over Triton College. TSU also picked up an exciting win over Niagra. Both teams were tied at 24 after the final bout and the Thunder took the victory with a three fall to two edge.

Bryan Wight (Fort Wayne, Ind./Homestead), Nick Kraus (Rolling Prairie, Ind./New Prairie), Louis Posa (Tecumesh, Mich./Clinton), and Mike Dosal (Saginaw, Mich./Arthur Hill) picked up two wins apiece for the Thunder. Wight won by fall in 1:41 against Triton and earned an 8-0 decision over Niagra at 141 pounds. Kraus was a 16-0 winner over Triton and a 5-2 winner over Niagra at 174 pounds. At 184 pounds, Posa earned a 15-3 major decision over Triton and won by fall in 3:36 against Niagra. Dosal took both matches by fall, defeating Triton in 1:20 and Niagra in 0:40.

TSU wrestlers returned to Muskegon on Saturday for the Muskegon Community College Open. Alex Fleet (Lowell, Mich./Lowell) wrestled to a second place finish at 184 with a 3-1 record. Kyle Brown (Livonia, Mich./Franklin) went 3-1 at 285 and placed second.   

11.03 / Thunder Wrestling Opens Season in Wisconsin

The Tri-State University wrestling team traveled to the University of Wisconsin over the weekend to compete in the Badger Duals. The Thunder went 1-2 on the weekend. Tri-State defeated the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh 22-16 and then fell to NCAA Division 1 University of Wisconsin 9-45. The University of Dubuque squeaked past the Thunder 21-22.

Kyle Pittman (Greensburg, Ind./Greensburg) led the Thunder with three victories. The highlight of the weekend for Pittman came during his match verse Mike Metzger of the University of Wisconsin. Pittman pinned Metzger in 2:03 minutes. Nick Kraus (Rolling Prairie, Ind./New Prairie) went 2-1 over the weekend and defeated Matt Manciag of the University of Wisconsin 7-6. Bryan Wight (Fort Wayne, Ind./Homestead), Zane Stenz (Alpena, Mich./Alpena), and Louis Posa (Tecumseh, Mich./Clinton) all went 2-1 at the Badger Duals.

The Thunder will return to mat this weekend at the Muskegon Community College Duals. The start time on Friday evening is 5:30 p.m. and then action will resume on Saturday morning at 10 a.m.
