Computer Usage Agreement

Introduction
Tri-State University is moving forward with aggressive technology initiatives to
improve the educational experience for its students. In order to secure University digital
information, provide a high level of service and availability, and control costs, the
following policy is defined. In addition, reference the Information Technology Security
Policy for information concerning the protection of the University’s digital assets.
Policy Administration
This policy has been approved by the Presidents Cabinet and administered by the
Information Technology (IT) department.
Policy Purpose
The purpose of the policy is to define acceptable use and expectations for
technology users, including defining the levels of support Information Technology will
provide.
Policy Applicability
This policy applies to all users of TSU-owned computers, networks, and
peripheral devices.
Sanctions for Non-Compliance
Sanctions for non-compliance will be addressed by the Chief Information Officer
(CIO) and the supervisor of the offending employee in collaboration with appropriate
University management.
Terms Defined
Hardware is defined as: any physical piece of equipment that may be attached to
or installed on a computer. Examples of hardware are, but not limited to, monitor,
keyboard, mouse, scanner, PDA, projector, workstations and others.
Software is defined as: written coded commands that tell a computer what tasks
to perform. Examples of software are, but not limited to, Microsoft Word, Photoshop,
Nero, iTunes and others.
User Agreement
- All requests for hardware and software service and support should be made by
contacting the IT Help Desk through phone (665-4275), email
(help@tristate.edu) or the IT Help Desk ticket system on the Intranet.
- University hardware standards and core software standards are defined and
maintained as a prerequisite to connecting to the TSU network. Contact the
IT Help Desk to obtain a current list of standards.
- User accounts will be “limited” accounts, thus users can not install software
on a Tri-State workstation. The IT department will have Administrative rights
which are required for software installation.
- Account sharing is strictly prohibited. You are responsible for all activity
conducted within your TSU account. Account information must not be given
to or accessed by anyone but the owner of the account.
- Use of personally-owned hardware peripherals or software with a TSU-owned
computer or the TSU Administrative Network is prohibited unless the
technology is consistent with current University standards and approved by
IT.
- Person’s requesting assistance from the IT Help Desk for standard hardware
and software will receive top priority. Technology that does not meet
standards will be serviced with a lower priority or not at all, depending on the
circumstances.
- Beginning with the FY08 budget year, all hardware and software is to be
procured by IT. Users agree to consult IT for recommendations when
considering purchasing hardware or software. This will protect the University
from software licensing infractions and insure that requested technology will
operate correctly in the TSU computing environment.
- Users agree to provide feedback regarding hardware, software and service
through surveys, round table discussions, and/or interviews if asked.
